Chapter 25 - The Last Appeal

Victor Sloan’s final appeal failed.

He remained incarcerated for remaining sentence.

His attorneys contacted Mara about restorative letter.

She declined meeting.

Accepted written if no expectation response.

Victor wrote:

I told myself the difference between you and me was that you were sentimental and I was practical.

The truth is both of us wanted results.

You eventually accepted when your method harmed.

I hid it when mine did.

Mara read.

Then:

I still believe Sentinel could have been extraordinary.

She almost smiled.

Of course.

Then:

I am sorry for Atlas.

No more.

Mara folded letter.

Lena asked:

“Reply?”

“No.”

“Forgive?”

“Parts maybe.”

“Same family vocabulary.”

Mara laughed.

Then she put letter in personal box, not archive.

Closure did not need public display.

Then Voss died? No need. Leave alive after sentence.

Karen Vale finished probation and moved out of defense work.

Owen Pike entered civilian job.

No one tracked forever.

Then Navy closed special Sentinel historical review.

Mara's classified file remained partly sealed for operational reasons.

She had once wanted total release to prove.

Now accepted some secrets legitimately protect others.

Difference:

secrecy should protect people, not reputation.

She said that in class.

Then student asked:

“How know difference?”

“You ask who benefits from silence.”

Not perfect answer.

Useful.

Then Lena announced engagement? She already had fiancé in Denver earlier but we forgot! She said fiancé traveling. Need continuity. We haven't mentioned since. Maybe relationship ended during move? We need resolve. Could say she and fiancé Michael had amicably ended relationship during first Denver return because neither wanted relocation compromise. Not a twist. We should insert now: Lena had ended engagement a year earlier? We omitted. Let's mention briefly: "Her former fiancé Michael had remained in Denver; they had ended engagement amicably after realizing neither wanted long-distance." Fine. No romance focus.

Lena said:

“I’m okay alone.”

Mara:

“I didn’t ask.”

“Your face did.”

They laugh.

No need pair everyone.

Then David remarried? no.

Family stable.

Then Atlas anniversary? no.

Then thirty-nine active Phase IV dogs aged out gradually.

At annual report only twenty-six still active.

Time.

Programs outlive crises.

Then Mara turned fifty-seven.

Lena threw small party.

Ryan.

David.

Tessa.

Keene.

No dogs.

Mara suspicious.

“Where are dogs?”

Lena:

“You said you wanted life outside.”

Mara smiled.

Maybe she did.

Then gift:

photo of Mara, Lena, David, Elias years ago.

No military uniform.

Family picnic.

Mara cried.

May you like

This was history before Sentinel.

A life not defined by betrayal.
