Chapter 24 - Ryan’s Mistake

Ryan Cole made a mistake.

Important because reform should not make new heroes infallible.

During readiness exercise, schedule pressure rose.

He approved extra session despite advisory recommendation for rest.

Nothing catastrophic.

One dog showed fatigue and was pulled.

Lena’s team flagged.

Ryan reported himself.

Mara heard.

She called.

“You okay?”

“I feel like hypocrite.”

“Good.”

“Good?”

“Means you noticed.”

He expected lecture.

She said:

“Fix system.”

Ryan reviewed why.

A visiting commander pushed.

He wanted inspection score.

Ryan compromised.

Same old pattern on smaller scale.

He changed policy so recovery veto rested veterinary/handler team, not single liaison under pressure.

Publicly documented.

No cover-up.

The difference between error and corruption often what happens next.

Mara used case in class anonymously until Ryan said use name.

“Why?”

“So people know reformers screw up too.”

Good.

Then Lena teased:

“Mom, you found younger version of yourself.”

Ryan protested.

“Cruel.”

Mara:

“She’s right.”

Then no resentment.

Institution learning.

This chapter matters because story does not end with bad people removed.

Pressure returns.

Systems need maintenance.

Mara knew maintenance.

Maybe that was why years in gray uniform mattered.

You fix same valve more than once.

No shame.

Then her old maintenance supervisor invited her to retirement party.

He had never known her history.

He said:

“You were terrible employee.”

Mara stared.

“You ignored work orders to check kennels.”

True.

“Also fixed everything.”

He handed a new toolbox.

Not battered.

Mara laughed.

“I don’t need.”

“Everyone needs toolbox.”

She kept.

Lena said:

“Another relic.”

“This one useful.”

Different.

May you like

Then Mara began repairing apartment shelf herself.

Normal.
