Chapter 23 - David Pays the First Check

David’s first restitution payment arrived at trust.

He invited Mara to coffee.

“I thought sending check would feel humiliating.”

“And?”

“Relieving.”

Mara nodded.

He had spent years trying to preserve image of competent son.

Now failure was documented.

No hiding.

Then he handed Mara copy of executor ledger.

Every Carter estate payment.

He had reconstructed with forensic accountant.

“I want you to see.”

Mara glanced.

“No.”

David looked hurt.

“I don’t need supervise you now.”

He slowly smiled.

“That’s good?”

“Yes.”

“The court and trust do.”

“Not me.”

Power boundary.

He put ledger away.

Then:

“I found a line from Dad.”

Mara groaned.

“Always.”

Not secret, just old memo:

David keeps this place alive. Mara keeps reminding us why. Both think the other job easier.

They stared.

Then laughed.

Elias knew.

Why never say directly?

Because parents fail too.

Then David asked:

“Should we name trust after Dad?”

Mara:

“No.”

“It already has Carter.”

“Change someday.”

“Really?”

“Yes.”

Family name need not permanent.

Trust board later renamed it Working Dog Stewardship Trust, with Carter archive as collection.

Mara supported.

Another inherited control released.

Then Elias’s old kennel building became public research center.

No family plaque at entrance.

A small historical exhibit inside.

Mara visited.

Her toolbox behind glass.

She glared.

Lena laughed.

“Iconic.”

“It’s broken.”

“Symbolism.”

Then Atlas photo.

Sleeping in grass.

Mara stood longest.

No guilt spike.

Just warmth.

Progress.

Then child asked:

“Did Atlas save people?”

Mara answered:

“Yes, in his working years.”

“Why picture sleeping?”

“Because that was important too.”

The child nodded.

Then asked:

“Did he love you?”

Mara paused.

Dogs' inner feelings not easily labeled.

“He trusted me.”

That was enough.

Then Mara went outside.

David joined.

They sat.

No mission.

May you like

No ledger.

Just siblings.
