Chapter 15 - Lena’s Choice

Lena received three offers.
Return to Denver.
Join Navy civilian veterinary program full time.
Direct independent Carter Trust research.
Everyone assumed she would choose dogs.
She surprised.
“I’m going back to Denver for six months.”
Mara hid disappointment better than expected.
“Okay.”
Lena smiled.
“You passed.”
“What?”
“I wanted to see if you’d try to steer.”
“That is manipulative.”
“Family tradition.”
They laughed.
Lena needed return to her own practice and decide outside crisis.
Good.
Before leaving, she asked Mara:
“What are you doing?”
Mara looked at toolbox.
“I might retire maintenance.”
“Why?”
“Everyone knows now.”
“So?”
“I liked invisible.”
“Maybe too much.”
Mara thought.
Then Lena said:
“You don’t have to be invisible or important.”
“You can just be person.”
Hardest role.
Then they packed Lena’s apartment.
No secret boxes.
The recovered wooden journal went to independent archive after scans.
Lena kept grandfather’s handwritten recipe for dog biscuits, not classified notes.
Mara laughed.
“That’s inheritance.”
Exactly.
Then David visited.
Awkward.
He brought no apology speech.
Helped carry boxes.
At end Lena hugged him.
Mara didn’t.
Not yet.
David accepted.
Then he told Mara:
“Dad left something for you too.”
“What?”
“Not archive.”
A bank envelope he had withheld? Careful, another secret. He found recently maybe.
Inside:
a small brass kennel tag.
ATLAS 48
Mara stared.
“Why did you have?”
“Dad’s desk.”
“I kept because I didn’t know how to give.”
“Three years?”
“Yes.”
Mara looked at brother.
“You still hide when afraid.”
“Yes.”
“So do I.”
Then she took tag.
Not forgiveness object.
Memory.
Later, she placed it in public archive next to Elias’s letter.
No private talisman.
Then Victor sentencing.
He received federal prison term? Procurement fraud could lead years. Let's say 6 years and financial penalties, debarment. Avoid exact? Could state "several years". User likes consequences. Let's say 7 years, debarment, restitution. Plausible enough.
Victor spoke:
“I believed readiness justified concealment.”
He did not apologize directly to Mara.
Fine.
Then Vector K9 Systems entered settlement, not dissolved.
Government contracts canceled/suspended.
Company restructured under external management.
Employees not implicated retained jobs where appropriate.
Commercial dog lines transferred oversight.
No scorched earth.
Then Admiral Keene received formal reprimand for oversight failures and retired on original schedule? Could seem light. He was not criminal. Inspector General cited failure. He accepted.
At retirement he invited Mara.
She attended.
Keene said privately:
“I’m sorry.”
“For signing?”
“For thinking summaries were enough.”
Mara nodded.
“Me too.”
“For what?”
“Thinking watching quietly was enough.”
Both.
Then Ryan promoted? Not necessary.
He remained liaison and built better program.
Then six months later Lena returned to San Diego for visit.
She found Mara not at maintenance.
Where?
A small classroom near kennel compound.
Teaching new handlers.
On board:
SAFETY IS NOT A REWARD FOR PERFORMANCE.
Lena stood doorway.
Mara noticed.
“You’re early.”
“You’re teaching.”
“Temporary.”
“Sure.”
Then a dog barked outside.
Mara looked automatically.
Lena smiled.
“Still watching.”
“Always.”
Then Lena said:
“I made decision.”
Mara waited.
“I’m moving to San Diego.”
Mara’s face lit.
Then Lena raised hand.
“For my job.”
“Not you.”
Mara nodded.
May you like
“I know.”
This time she meant it.
