Chapter 29 - The White Ribbon

The tenth anniversary of 3:17 Initiative brought pressure for ceremony.

Claire resisted.

Then agreed to one event because the initiative had funded programs in fifty hospitals.

Not centered on her.

The new national training center opened at St. Mary’s.

There was a white ribbon across doors.

When I saw it, I remembered sheet.

Claire did too.

She touched ribbon.

“White again.”

“Want another color?”

“No.”

She smiled.

“Let it mean something else.”

At 3:10 P.M., people gathered.

Ava retired from bedside but remained educator.

Jamie became nursing supervisor.

Samir was attending physician now and had created policy encouraging junior clinicians to document disagreement respectfully.

Eleanor, older, sat in second row.

No board pin.

Lillian Park beside her.

Claire stood at podium.

She said:

“Ten years ago a form said I was dead.”

“A technician saw something that contradicted form.”

“A nurse believed her.”

“A team checked again.”

“That second look is why I’m here.”

Then:

“We built this center so second looks are not acts of courage.”

“They are ordinary work.”

Perfect.

At 3:16, Claire stepped toward ribbon.

They handed scissors.

Her left hand trembled.

I noticed.

She looked at me.

I looked at clock.

One minute.

Then Claire laughed softly.

“What?”

I whispered.

“Nothing.”

She raised scissors.

Clock changed.

3:17 P.M.

The same minute.

Different decade.

Different white fabric.

Claire cut.

Applause.

The ribbon fell.

Her left hand remained raised for a second.

Alive.

Strong.

Visible.

I nearly cried.

But the real ending came later.

After crowd gone, Claire and I walked downstairs.

The old morgue remained active.

She wanted one final visit.

At 3:17 A.M. ten years earlier, her hand had risen under sheet.

At 3:17 P.M. today, that hand opened a building.

Mirrors can become exits.

Then Claire said:

“Come tomorrow night.”

“Why?”

“No.”

“You’ll see.”

I groaned.

“I hate mysteries.”

She smiled.

“Apparently not enough.”

May you like

One chapter remained.
