Chapter 23 - Eleanor’s Five Years

Eleanor’s fiduciary ban became five years.

She could not serve on charitable boards.

At first she treated it like exile.

Then something changed.

She volunteered at rehabilitation clinic she once almost destroyed herself to save.

Not management.

Front desk twice a week.

Patients did not know her history.

She scheduled appointments.

Filed forms.

Sometimes got yelled at.

Claire found this hilarious.

“Good for you.”

Eleanor:

“I used to approve budgets larger than this clinic.”

“And now?”

“I know where copier jams.”

Growth.

Then regulator allowed her to teach governance ethics? No, maybe not yet.

She did not need redemption platform.

Then at year three she asked Claire if she should reapply to board after ban.

Claire said:

“No.”

Eleanor stared.

“Why?”

“Because being allowed doesn’t mean needed.”

That hurt.

Then Eleanor laughed.

“You sound like Samuel.”

Claire:

“I hope less controlling.”

Eleanor decided not to return.

She stayed volunteer.

Power abstained.

That was consequence and change.

Then she handed Claire old St. Mary’s board pin.

“What do you want me to do?”

“Throw.”

Claire:

“Recycle.”

May you like

Ordinary.
