Chapter 26 - The Room Becomes a Room

St. Mary’s renovated morgue.

New lighting.

Updated equipment.

Better emergency communication.

Same refrigeration hum.

Before reopening, Claire asked to visit.

This time alone with me.

She stood where stretcher had been.

No fear at first.

Then hands shook.

I waited.

She touched stainless rail.

“Still hate it.”

“Okay.”

She sat on chair.

We talked about nothing.

Weather.

My certification exam.

Her piano.

Then fifteen minutes passed.

Claire stood.

“Ready.”

“To leave?”

“No.”

“To stay one more minute.”

She did.

Then left.

The room did not heal her.

She changed relationship to room by choice.

Later she told therapist it stopped appearing in dreams as often.

No magical cure.

Gradual.

Then she donated nothing to morgue personally.

The initiative funded through independent grants.

No ownership.

Good.
