Chapter 22 - Mercer’s Last Statement

Dr. Mercer wrote a formal statement for medical ethics board before incarceration transfer.
Claire received copy because she was affected party.
He described how conflicts accumulate.
A financial debt.
A favor.
A hidden payment.
A chart shortcut.
A silence.
Then one night a friend asks you to help with his wife.
You no longer know where professional boundary disappeared because you crossed it years earlier.
Mercer did not excuse.
He wrote:
The first unethical decision did not cause Claire Holloway’s near-death. It trained me to make the next decision faster.
That sentence entered medical training with permission.
Claire allowed her name? She agreed.
No sanitizing.
Then Mercer said:
I do not know who administered the agent that caused her condition. I know I had opportunities to protect her after collapse and chose myself instead.
Truth.
No false certainty.
Claire wrote one response:
I accept that statement as accurate to what you can know.
Not forgiveness.
No further correspondence.
Then she closed.
Mercer disappeared from story.
May you like
As he should.
