Chapter 6 - The Missing Twelve Minutes

The production company was called Silver Frame Events.
Its owner answered Leon’s call at 8:14 the next morning.
“Yes, we filmed the foyer.”
“Full time?”
“From six-thirty until after the speeches.”
“Can you preserve everything?”
Pause.
“We already delivered the requested footage.”
“To whom?”
“Ms. Vaughn’s office.”
“When?”
“Last night.”
Malcolm took the phone.
“This is Malcolm Cole. Do you still have the raw files?”
Another pause.
“I need to check.”
“Do not delete anything.”
“We usually keep event footage thirty days.”
“Good.”
Two hours later, Silver Frame sent an archive.
The foyer camera recorded nearly three continuous hours.
Except for one gap.
Twelve minutes missing.
Beginning two minutes before Evelyn’s champagne glass broke.
Ending ten minutes after Malcolm descended the stairs.
Malcolm stared at the timeline.
“Why?”
The editor sounded confused.
“Our cloud shows those clips were manually marked for exclusion during live ingest.”
“By your staff?”
“The project administrator account.”
“Who had access?”
“Our lead editor and the client representative.”
“Name?”
“Celeste Vaughn’s communications director, Mara Ellis.”
Malcolm knew Mara.
She worked directly for Celeste at Meridian Crest.
Corporate employee.
Using company time and resources for Celeste’s private event.
He called IT.
Preserve everything.
No accusations yet.
The raw camera card still existed.
Silver Frame’s technician physically retrieved it from storage.
The missing twelve minutes were there.
Malcolm did not watch alone.
Evelyn.
Denise.
Leon.
And an outside investigator hired by the trust.
The clip began.
6:56 p.m.
Evelyn entered the foyer.
She spoke briefly with Nia.
Then Celeste approached.
Audio was imperfect but usable.
Celeste asked,
“Why are you down here?”
Evelyn:
“The trustee briefing.”
Celeste laughed.
“There is no briefing.”
Evelyn pulled out the invitation.
Celeste took it.
Read it.
Then said:
“You did this again.”
Evelyn looked confused.
“No.”
“You keep inventing meetings.”
“It’s printed.”
Celeste handed the invitation back.
“Evelyn, you need to stop.”
Then the part nobody knew.
Celeste looked toward the balcony camera.
Directly toward it.
She knew where it was.
Then she guided Evelyn several feet left.
Into perfect view.
The argument continued.
Celeste mentioned Evelyn’s memory.
Missed meetings.
Medication.
Dependence.
All the language later appearing in the incapacity petition.
Malcolm felt sick.
“This was staged.”
Denise said nothing.
They watched.
Celeste stepped backward.
Hit Evelyn’s glass.
Champagne spilled.
Then the public humiliation began.
Nia entered.
Malcolm descended.
The rest matched everyone’s memory.
But before Malcolm reached them, Celeste whispered something close to Evelyn.
Audio enhancement made it barely understandable.
“You could have made this easy.”
Malcolm stopped the video.
His face went cold.
Evelyn looked away.
“You heard her?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I didn’t understand what she meant.”
Denise did.
“Resign the trust.”
Evelyn nodded.
Malcolm watched the clip again.
Celeste had not planned for Nia.
That was the disruption.
She likely wanted footage of Evelyn appearing confused and emotional during a gala.
A public example.
Something to support a narrative.
Instead, a maid stepped into frame and challenged the premise.
That changed the story.
“Where is Nia?” Evelyn asked.
“Home, I assume.”
“No.”
Evelyn looked at Malcolm.
“Where is her job?”
He understood.
Bellmont had terminated her after receiving manipulated footage.
“That gets fixed today.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“Not by buying her silence.”
“I wouldn’t.”
“Good.”
Malcolm called Bellmont personally.
The staffing company’s owner became nervous the moment she learned unedited footage existed.
“We acted on client information.”
“You acted on edited evidence.”
“We can reinstate Ms. Brooks.”
Malcolm answered,
“That decision belongs between your company and your employee. But you will receive the complete video.”
Afterward, Evelyn smiled.
“You learned something.”
“What?”
“You didn’t order them to give her the job back.”
Malcolm sighed.
“You’re enjoying correcting me.”
“Very much.”
The humor lasted five seconds.
Then the outside investigator returned.
“We found another issue.”
He had been reviewing metadata attached to the fake invitation Evelyn received.
The invitation had been printed professionally.
The paper stock matched Meridian Crest executive stationery.
The file was created on a corporate laptop.
Assigned to Mara Ellis.
Celeste’s communications director.
Malcolm’s face hardened.
“Contact her.”
The investigator shook his head.
“We did.”
“And?”
“She resigned forty minutes ago.”
“From Meridian?”
“Yes.”
“Where is she?”
“Unknown.”
Malcolm stood.
Then the investigator added:
“She deleted eleven folders before resigning.”
Malcolm almost swore.
“But?”
“But Meridian uses enterprise backups.”
He placed a laptop on the table.
“One folder has already been recovered.”
Name:
EVELYN TRANSITION.
And inside it was a document that made even Denise Carter stop breathing.
PUBLIC NARRATIVE PLAN — TRUSTEE SUCCESSION.
Someone had not merely prepared to remove Evelyn legally.
May you like
They had prepared to explain her removal to the public before it ever happened.
