Chapter 28 - The Woman in White

Three years after the gala, Evelyn saw Celeste once.
At an airport.
No white gown.
No lawyers.
No cameras.
Celeste noticed her first.
Both women stopped.
For a moment, the old foyer seemed to exist between them.
Celeste approached carefully.
“Mrs. Cole.”
“Celeste.”
“You look well.”
“So do you.”
Silence.
Celeste touched the strap of her bag.
“I won’t keep you.”
Evelyn nodded.
Then Celeste said,
“I’m sorry.”
Evelyn looked at her.
Not the courtroom version.
Not a lawyer-reviewed statement.
Two words.
No demand.
Evelyn considered.
“I believe you.”
Celeste’s eyes filled.
“That isn’t the same as forgiveness.”
“No.”
“I know.”
Another silence.
Evelyn added,
“But I’m glad you’re sorry.”
Celeste nodded.
Then stepped aside.
They walked in opposite directions.
No embrace.
No reconciliation.
No need.
Some relationships ended.

Healing did not always mean reopening them.
