Chapter 27 - The Brooch

Evelyn eventually wore the sapphire brooch again.
Not at a gala.
At lunch.
Nia noticed immediately.
“You’re wearing it.”
“Yes.”
“Special occasion?”
“No.”
“That’s why?”
Evelyn smiled.
“Yes.”
For months the brooch had been evidence.
Proof.
A symbol of being manipulated.
Now it was jewelry again.
She pinned it to a simple blue jacket and ordered soup.
Nia stared.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“You’re doing symbolism.”
“Malcolm says that too.”
“Then your whole family is exhausting.”
Evelyn laughed.
Across town, Malcolm received a photograph from Nia.
Just the brooch.
No caption.
He understood.
He called his mother.
“You wearing it?”
“Yes.”
“How does it feel?”
“Like a brooch.”
He smiled.
May you like
Perfect.
