Chapter 7 - My Mother’s ApologyMy mother apologized on a Tuesday morning.

Not for the contract.

Not for being away.

For one sentence.

“They thrive on your reaction.”

We were in my apartment.

I was using my older prosthetic.

It pinched slightly.

Rebecca watched me adjust it.

“I gave you bad advice.”

“You didn't know.”

“That doesn't make it good advice.”

“You thought Trent was just saying things.”

“I should have asked more.”

I sat.

“You were three hundred miles away.”

“I am still your mother.”

“I'm nineteen.”

“That has not stopped you from leaving dishes in my sink.”

I laughed.

Then she became serious.

“I taught you to tolerate too much.”

I knew what she meant.

Military families learn endurance.

Move.

Adapt.

Don't complain.

Keep functioning.

After my accident two years earlier, those habits helped me survive rehabilitation.

They also taught me to hide pain.

My mother praised every milestone.

First transfer.

First prosthetic fitting.

First independent walk.

I began to believe asking for help meant moving backward.

So when Trent mocked my gait, I said nothing.

When he shoved me once outside class, I said it was an accident.

When the university failed to respond, I decided reporting twice would make me look weak.

Rebecca listened.

Then said:

“I need you to understand something I learned too late.”

“What?”

“Endurance is not silence.”

The words stayed with me.

She continued:

“You don't prove independence by refusing backup.”

“That's rich coming from you.”

“Yes.”

She smiled sadly.

“I know.”

My mother's flaw mirrored mine.

She thought leadership meant carrying everything without showing strain.

The overpass broke that illusion for both of us.

She requested counseling through military family services.

I started therapy on campus with an outside provider.

Not because Trent broke me.

May you like

Because I wanted to understand why I had allowed humiliation to become routine before calling it serious.

Healing was not surrender either.
