Chapter 28 - The Same RouteI avoided the overpass for almost two years.

There were other routes.
Longer.
Less direct.
I told myself it was convenience.
My therapist called that nonsense.
Eventually I decided to cross.
Alone.
Halfway up the hill my hands began sweating.
The new barrier rose beside me.
Traffic roared below.
I stopped where Trent had thrown the prosthetic.
No marker.
No stain.
The bridge had forgotten.
Bodies remember longer than concrete.
I stood there until my breathing slowed.
Then continued.
Click.
Whir.
Click.
Whir.
No convoy.
No Trent.
No Greg.
Just me.
I reached the other side.
Then realized something embarrassing.
I had expected to feel transformed.
I did not.
I was hungry.
