Chapter 11 - Wade Calder’s OfferWade requested mediation.

I agreed because Alicia recommended hearing the offer.

Wade entered with two lawyers.

My mother did not attend.

Good.

This was mine.

Wade offered:

full prosthetic replacement.

Medical expenses.

Four years' tuition.

Housing.

$300,000 additional compensation.

Confidentiality regarding civil claims.

Alicia clarified:

“Confidentiality would not prevent cooperation with criminal or university investigations.”

Correct.

The offer was not an illegal gag.

Still, it wanted privacy.

I asked Wade:

“Why?”

“To resolve harm.”

“No. Why did you protect him for years?”

His attorneys objected.

Wade answered anyway.

“Because I'm his father.”

“That explanation is getting old.”

He looked tired.

“I thought one disciplinary record could destroy his future.”

“And now?”

“Now I think preventing every record did more damage.”

That surprised me.

He continued:

“I made him believe consequences were negotiable.”

I said nothing.

“I didn't tell him to touch you.”

“I know.”

“I didn't tell him to throw your leg.”

“I know.”

“But I taught him I would fix whatever came after.”

There it was.

The deeper confession.

Not criminal conspiracy.

Parenting.

Power.

Repeated rescue.

I declined the settlement that day.

Not forever.

I needed the investigations completed first.

Wade respected that.

Maybe for the first time.
