Chapter 8 - Anna’s MoneyChloe stared at her sister’s name until the letters stopped looking real.

ANNA MARIE EVANS FAMILY TRUST.
Eighty-four million seven hundred thousand dollars.
Anna had died at twenty-six.
She had worked part-time at a bookstore between chemotherapy cycles.
She had once borrowed Chloe’s debit card to buy groceries because her disability payment had been delayed.
She had never had eighty-four thousand dollars.
Certainly not eighty-four million.
“This is impossible.”
Adrian opened the account history.
The first deposit had been made eight years and nine months earlier.
Three months after Thomas Evans died.
Five million dollars.
Then periodic transfers.
Construction profits.
Dividend payments.
Property revenue.
The balance had grown steadily.
Lorenzo looked at Elena.
“Did my father create this?”
“I never knew about it.”
Chloe’s voice shook.
“Why Anna?”
Adrian opened the trust instrument stored in the ledger.
“Because she was already dead.”
Lorenzo understood.
“A dead beneficiary draws less attention.”
“Especially if the trust is structured as a memorial foundation vehicle.”
Chloe read the document.
The trustee was a law firm she did not recognize.
Foster, Lane & Beck.
She searched the board signatures.
One name appeared repeatedly.
Daniel Mercer.
Her grief transformed into rage.
“He used her.”
Lorenzo said nothing.
“He used my dead sister’s name to hide money.”
Chloe shoved the laptop away.
“I want him dead.”
The words shocked even her.
Lorenzo watched carefully.
Three hours ago he might have understood them as ordinary rage.
Now they mattered because Chloe possessed the skills to make them real.
“No,” he said.
She laughed.
“You are giving me moral advice?”
“No.”
“Then don’t.”
“I’m giving you practical advice.”
“You run an organization where practical advice usually arrives with a body bag.”
His jaw tightened.
“Not always.”
“Your father buried evidence. Victor ordered murders. Mercer stole my sister’s identity. Do not stand there pretending you are different because you say please to waitresses.”
The words landed.
Lorenzo’s face changed.
Chloe immediately regretted nothing.
He stepped closer.
“You’re right.”
That disarmed her.
“My father protected the family before he protected the truth. I inherited that habit.”
Elena looked at him.
“Enzo.”
“No, Mother.”
His voice was quiet.
“She’s right.”
He turned toward Chloe.
“If I tell you Mercer deserves mercy, I become exactly what you think I am. I don’t care about Mercer’s mercy.”
“Then what?”
“I care about your father getting the truth he wanted.”
Chloe’s anger faltered.
Lorenzo pointed toward the laptop.
“If Mercer dies, Victor says he was a corrupt official acting alone. If Victor dies, everyone around him destroys documents and hires lawyers. But if that ledger becomes evidence—”
“It implicates you too.”
The room fell silent.
Lorenzo knew it.
There were Capello transfers inside the drive.
Some legitimate.
Some criminal.
Maybe many criminal.
If he turned over everything, he would not walk away untouched.
“That is my problem,” he said.
Chloe studied him.
“Would you do it?”
“What?”
“Give federal investigators evidence that could destroy your organization?”
Lorenzo looked toward the frozen image of his father.
“I don’t know.”
It was the most honest answer he had given her.
Elena stood.
“The blue account matters for another reason.”
They looked at her.
“Carlo believed Victor had money hidden outside the family.”
Adrian nodded.
“He did.”
“But eighty-four million is too much for a reserve.”
“So?”
“So Carlo may have moved Victor’s money.”
Lorenzo frowned.
“Into Anna’s trust?”
“To keep Victor from accessing it.”
Chloe almost laughed.
“My dead sister has been holding Victor’s stolen fortune hostage for eight years.”
“Possibly.”
“Can he access the account?”
Adrian checked the trust language.
“Two signatures required for principal withdrawal.”
“Whose?”
He read.
“Daniel Mercer.”
Chloe’s expression hardened.
“And?”
Adrian stopped.
The second authorization field was not a name.
It was a designation.
Successor Keyholder under Thomas Evans Testamentary Memorandum.
Everyone looked at Chloe.
She felt the brass key against her palm.
“No.”
Adrian continued reading.
“Upon Thomas Evans’s death, keyholder status transfers to surviving daughter Chloe Anne Evans.”
Lorenzo stared at her.
Victor had needed her alive.
Until he found another way to bypass the trust.
Then he needed her dead.
“That explains Meridian,” Adrian said.
Chloe’s mind raced.
“Victor recruited me through Kessler because he wanted access.”
“And Calumet?”
“They must have believed the key would be on me.”
Lorenzo looked at her.
“But you had hidden it at Anna’s grave.”
“Yes.”
“So the operation failed.”
“And then they tried to kill me.”
Adrian nodded.
“Because once they knew you didn’t have the key, keeping you alive became dangerous.”
Chloe stared at him.
“You were supposed to die too.”
“I was.”
“Why didn’t you?”
Adrian’s expression closed.
There it was again.
A missing piece.
Before Chloe could force the answer, Elena’s landline rang.
Everyone froze.
Nobody should have been calling now.
Elena picked up.
“Hello?”
A woman was sobbing.
“Elena?”
It was Isabella.
Lorenzo grabbed the receiver.
“Izzy.”
“Lorenzo?”
Her cry broke.
“Oh, God. You’re alive.”
“Where are you?”
“I made a mistake.”
“What happened?”
“Samuel knows.”
“Knows what?”
“That I took the file.”
Lorenzo’s face darkened.
“Where are you?”
“His office.”
“Are you alone?”
“No.”
A male voice sounded faintly behind her.
Samuel.
“Give me the phone, Isabella.”
She whispered, “I’m sorry.”
The line changed hands.
Samuel Reed spoke.
“Lorenzo.”
“Samuel.”
“I suggest we remain calm.”
“You have my sister.”
“She is my wife.”
“That was not my question.”
Samuel sighed.
“Victor wants an exchange.”
Chloe moved closer.
Samuel continued.
“The Crown Ledger for Isabella.”
Lorenzo looked at Chloe.
She shook her head.
Samuel’s voice lowered.
“And Chloe Evans.”
Now Chloe stopped.
“He specifically wants her alive.”
Lorenzo’s eyes moved to the brass key.
The trust.
Eighty-four million dollars.
“What happens if I refuse?”
Samuel was silent for several seconds.
Then he said, “Ask Chloe what happened to Adrian Vale’s wife.”
Chloe turned slowly.
Adrian had gone white.
Samuel hung up.
Everyone looked at him.
Chloe whispered, “You had a wife?”
Adrian did not answer.
“Adrian.”
He closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
“What happened to her?”
His voice barely carried.
“Victor killed her.”
Chloe stared at him.
May you like
Then Adrian added the part that made everything worse.
“Because she was the reason you survived Calumet.”
