Chapter 15 - The Murder WarrantAdrian disappeared for eleven minutes.

That frightened Chloe more than if he had shouted.

She found him inside the church sanctuary sitting alone in the last pew.

No coat.

No weapon visible.

Stained-glass light colored the floor around him.

“Do you believe it?” Chloe asked.

He kept looking forward.

“No.”

She sat beside him.

“That was fast.”

“I buried Rachel.”

“You buried a coffin.”

“I identified her.”

“Mercer can manufacture evidence.”

“Yes.”

“Then why are you sitting here?”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“Because grief doesn’t care what I know.”

Chloe understood.

“You want to ask me.”

“Yes.”

“So ask.”

He turned.

“Did you ever go back to my house after Calumet?”

“No.”

“Did you contact Rachel?”

“No.”

“Did you know where she lived?”

“No.”

“Did you know she had a daughter?”

“No.”

He watched her face.

Chloe did not look away.

Finally Adrian nodded.

“I believe you.”

She exhaled.

“But somebody built a case.”

“Yes.”

“And not today.”

That mattered.

A homicide warrant required evidence.

Affidavits.

Judicial review.

Mercer had prepared it before the restaurant attack.

Maybe years earlier.

“He kept it as insurance,” Chloe said.

“Against what?”

“Us finding each other.”

Adrian understood.

Mercer knew Adrian was alive.

That meant Victor might as well.

“So my entire disappearance—”

“Was tolerated.”

The word hurt.

Adrian had believed he was hiding Emily.

Maybe Victor had simply chosen not to move against him.

Yet.

They returned to the basement.

Naomi had obtained part of the warrant affidavit.

The alleged evidence was devastating.

A neighbor claimed she saw a woman matching Chloe outside Rachel’s home.

A traffic camera captured Chloe’s old vehicle three blocks away.

A bloody glove contained Rachel’s DNA and partial genetic markers consistent with Chloe.

Adrian read twice.

“That car burned at Calumet.”

Chloe nodded.

“Meridian reported it destroyed.”

“Then someone had access to it before destruction.”

Naomi continued.

“The glove is worse.”

Chloe looked at her.

“How?”

“The partial profile could plausibly match you.”

“Could?”

“It isn’t complete enough to identify a person uniquely, but with the other evidence…”

“They built a narrative.”

“Yes.”

Lorenzo studied the document.

“Where was the glove found?”

“Alley behind Rachel’s house.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

“Meridian.”

Chloe looked at him.

“They had my medical samples.”

Field teams underwent physical exams.

Blood draws.

Emergency kits.

A corrupt lab could have created contaminated evidence.

“Mercer used government access to legitimize it,” Chloe said.

Elena looked horrified.

“How do you fight something like that?”

“With documentation.”

Lorenzo almost smiled.

“Spoken like an accountant’s daughter.”

Chloe looked at him.

“My father would be unbearable right now.”

For the first time, grief carried warmth.

At five o’clock they watched Mercer’s press conference.

He stood behind the city seal.

Calm.

Concerned.

Trustworthy.

“Ms. Evans is considered dangerous.”

Chloe stared at the screen.

Mercer described Meridian.

Calumet.

The restaurant.

He praised police.

Expressed sympathy for Rachel Vale’s family.

Then a reporter asked about his personal relationship with Chloe’s father.

Mercer paused perfectly.

“Thomas Evans was my closest friend.”

Chloe’s face hardened.

“I loved his daughters like family.”

Adrian switched off the television.

“No.”

Chloe reached for the remote.

“Leave it.”

Mercer continued.

“That makes today especially painful.”

Lorenzo’s voice was cold.

“He’s good.”

“Yes.”

“He believes some of it.”

“That’s what makes people like him convincing.”

Mercer looked directly into the cameras.

“Chloe, if you can hear me, turn yourself in. Let the truth come out.”

She laughed.

The audacity almost impressed her.

“Fine.”

Everyone looked at her.

Lorenzo frowned.

“Fine what?”

“I’ll let the truth come out.”

She called Naomi.

“Can you arrange a live interview?”

“With whom?”

“Someone Mercer cannot control.”

“Every network wants you.”

“Pick one with aggressive lawyers.”

Naomi understood.

“You cannot appear in person.”

“I won’t.”

Shaw had warned against public disclosures that could compromise prosecution.

Chloe would not release the full ledger.

She did not need to.

She needed to break Mercer’s monopoly on the story.

At 6:20 p.m., Chloe appeared by encrypted video on national television.

Her face visible.

No disguise.

For three years she had hidden.

Now millions watched.

The interviewer asked first.

“Did you kill Rachel Vale?”

“No.”

“Did you work for Meridian Risk?”

“Yes.”

“Did you fire a weapon inside The Sovereign last night?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Three armed men were attempting to murder Lorenzo Capello and endangering civilians.”

“Why protect a reputed organized-crime leader?”

“Because murder is murder even when the victim has done bad things.”

Lorenzo watched from across the room.

The answer struck him.

The interviewer continued.

“Deputy Mayor Mercer says you are dangerous.”

Chloe looked into the camera.

“Daniel Mercer signed probate documents connected to my father after my father wrote that Mercer should be investigated if he died.”

The interviewer’s face changed.

“Do you have proof?”

“Yes.”

“Will you provide it?”

“To federal investigators.”

“What do you want Mr. Mercer to know?”

Chloe had not prepared the answer.

She thought of Thomas.

Anna.

Margaret carrying wine through The Sovereign.

Rachel treating a stranger.

Carlo recording his confession.

All the people harmed because powerful men controlled information.

“I want him to know I finally read what my father wrote.”

The interview ended.

Within minutes Mercer’s office issued a denial.

Within thirty, reporters found the public probate docket.

By seven, #ThomasEvans was trending nationally.

Then Isabella called.

Not Victor.

Not Samuel.

Isabella.

The number appeared on Elena’s burner phone.

Lorenzo answered.

“Izzy.”

Her voice whispered.

“Don’t say my name.”

“Are you safe?”

“No.”

“Where?”

“Calumet.”

Chloe moved closer.

Isabella spoke fast.

“They moved me early. Samuel left his phone on the table. I have maybe thirty seconds.”

“Which building?”

“I don’t know the number. Red loading cranes outside. River on the east side.”

Adrian opened satellite images.

“Anything else?”

“An old blue sign. Monarch Steel.”

Adrian found it.

“I know the site.”

Lorenzo gripped the phone.

“Is Samuel with you?”

Isabella’s voice changed.

“Yes.”

“Did he hurt you?”

“No.”

Then she whispered, “He’s trying to help me.”

Everyone froze.

“What?”

“He says Victor plans to kill all of us after the exchange.”

A sound in the background.

Door opening.

Isabella rushed the last words.

“Samuel wants out.”

The call ended.

Lorenzo looked at Chloe.

“Do we trust him?”

Chloe stared at the dark phone.

A husband who had betrayed his wife.

A man owned by Victor.

A frightened criminal asking for one last chance.

“No.”

May you like

Lorenzo nodded.

Then Chloe added, “But we use him anyway.”
