Chapter 13 - Thomas’s AccusationNaomi read from the probate memorandum over speakerphone.

The first pages matched the letter Elena had hidden.

Margaret.

Vittorio.

The river properties.

Victor’s possible claim.

Then Naomi reached page thirteen.

Her voice changed.

“Thomas wrote this six weeks before his death.”

Chloe stared out the van window.

“Read it.”

I have received two threats in the past month. Carlo believes they came from Victor Moretti. I do not.

Lorenzo leaned forward.

Victor wants the evidence because he believes it proves his inheritance was stolen. Killing me would make that evidence harder to find.

Adrian muttered, “Logical.”

Naomi continued.

Daniel Mercer, however, wants the evidence destroyed.

Nobody spoke.

Daniel has repeatedly asked me to surrender Margaret’s notes and all historical company records. He claims exposure would damage innocent people and undermine ongoing federal cases.

Chloe’s stomach tightened.

I no longer believe him.

Naomi paused.

“Continue.”

On March 3, I discovered Daniel accessed my office without permission.

Chloe closed her eyes.

Uncle Daniel.

Cannoli at Christmas.

Her father had known.

I confronted him. He admitted he had been working with Victor for several years.

Lorenzo looked at Adrian.

“So Mercer served Victor.”

Naomi kept reading.

Daniel claims he did so to monitor Victor and prevent violence. I believe he is lying.

Then came the line that altered everything.

If I die in an accident, investigate Daniel Mercer first.

Chloe stopped breathing.

There it was.

Not suspicion born nine years later.

Thomas had named him.

“Why was that sealed?” she whispered.

Naomi answered.

“Carlo’s attorney argued that releasing it could compromise a federal investigation.”

“Mercer’s investigation.”

“Yes.”

“He used his office to bury an accusation against himself.”

“It appears that way.”

Lorenzo looked furious.

“My father allowed it.”

“He may not have known the full contents.”

Chloe looked at Elena.

“Did Carlo read the memorandum?”

“I don’t know.”

“Find out.”

“How?”

“The Crown Ledger.”

Adrian searched.

Documents.

Emails.

Archived messages.

One scanned note appeared.

Carlo’s handwriting.

DANIEL SAYS THOMAS WAS PARANOID. DO NOT MOVE WITHOUT PROOF.

Chloe laughed bitterly.

“Mercer told him my father was unstable.”

The pattern was old and familiar.

Discredit the person telling the truth.

Then call the silence prudence.

Naomi continued.

“There’s more.”

Chloe almost said she had had enough.

But truth did not care about exhaustion.

“Read.”

I have taken steps to protect Chloe and Anna.

Chloe’s head snapped up.

Anna’s illness makes her unsuitable as a direct custodian. Chloe’s military service creates different risks. Neither daughter knows what I am doing.

The Anna Marie Evans Family Trust.

Thomas had approved the structure.

Not the theft.

But the name.

Funds diverted by Victor and Mercer have been redirected through a recovery mechanism established with Carlo.

Lorenzo exhaled.

“So the eighty-four million—”

“Was seized from Victor,” Chloe finished.

Thomas continued.

The trust is not an inheritance. It is evidence.

Adrian nodded slowly.

The account itself mapped the money.

Every deposit was proof.

No principal should ever be distributed to my daughters. Upon lawful resolution, the funds should be returned to identified victims, public entities or legitimate owners.

Chloe felt something inside her loosen.

Anna’s name had not been stolen by Thomas.

He had used it as a shield.

Whether that had been wise was another question.

But not corruption.

Naomi reached the last paragraph.

If Daniel learns Chloe is successor keyholder, he may attempt to manipulate her through me, Margaret or Anna. If all of us are dead, he may instead try to recruit her.

Chloe closed her eyes.

Kessler.

Meridian.

Her career.

Thomas had predicted it.

Nine years ago.

He will not approach as an enemy.

Naomi stopped.

Chloe finished the thought herself.

“He’ll approach as family.”

No one said anything.

The parish van entered a church parking garage.

Father Michael shut off the engine.

Chloe remained seated.

All her adult life she had thought Mercer protected her after Thomas died.

In reality, he had guided her.

Military deployment.

Meridian recruitment.

Sealed records.

The storage-locker lie.

Perhaps even her decision to hide at The Sovereign.

Had he suggested it indirectly?

Three years earlier, after Calumet, Chloe had found an anonymous envelope containing cash, identity papers and one typed line:

Go somewhere powerful men never look at the staff.

She had assumed Adrian sent it.

She looked at him.

“The envelope.”

“What envelope?”

“The one after Calumet.”

Adrian frowned.

“I never sent you anything.”

Cold spread through her.

“Then Mercer did.”

Lorenzo understood.

“He placed you at The Sovereign.”

“Why?”

Adrian answered.

“To watch you.”

Chloe thought of managers who hired her unusually quickly.

A background check that somehow passed despite her manufactured identity.

A private dining room frequented by Victor.

And Lorenzo.

Mercer had hidden her somewhere he could monitor both sides.

“You were bait,” Adrian said.

“For Victor?”

“Maybe.”

Lorenzo looked at Chloe.

“Or me.”

She stared at him.

Mercer could have expected Chloe to learn something from Capello conversations.

A contingency.

A human surveillance device who didn’t know she was working.

Chloe’s anger became colder.

“He built my hiding place.”

Father Michael opened the van door.

“Then perhaps stop hiding.”

Chloe looked at him.

The priest shrugged.

“I have been listening for thirty minutes. Everyone in this story seems to suffer from confusing secrecy with strategy.”

Lorenzo smiled faintly.

“That is annoyingly accurate.”

Father Michael pointed at him.

“And you’re the worst.”

“Why me?”

“You inherited professionals.”

Elena almost laughed again.

Chloe looked at the encrypted drive.

Thomas’s truth.

Carlo’s confession.

Victor’s money.

Mercer’s crimes.

A forged trust.

Isabella in danger.

For years every person had held one piece and feared sharing it.

That had allowed Victor and Mercer to control the whole picture.

“We put it together,” Chloe said.

Adrian looked at her.

“What?”

“All of it.”

“Tonight?”

“Before Calumet.”

Lorenzo frowned.

“That gives us hours.”

“We don’t need everything.”

She pointed at the ledger.

“We need enough.”

“For whom?”

Chloe looked at Naomi’s name glowing on the phone.

“Federal prosecutors.”

Lorenzo became still.

“You’re serious.”

“Yes.”

“That ledger contains my family’s crimes.”

“Yes.”

“My crimes.”

“Probably.”

Elena whispered, “Chloe.”

“No more sealed rooms.”

Lorenzo stared at her.

This was the choice Carlo had refused.

Family or truth.

Except Chloe no longer believed it was really a choice.

A family preserved through lies was already damaged.

“What happens to Isabella while prosecutors study evidence?” Lorenzo asked.

“We still go to Calumet.”

“And if they arrest me first?”

“Then we control timing.”

“How?”

Naomi interrupted through the speaker.

“I may have someone.”

Everyone looked at the phone.

“Who?”

“Assistant U.S. Attorney Rebecca Shaw.”

Lorenzo’s expression changed.

He knew the name.

Federal organized crime unit.

Aggressive.

Unbought.

Dangerous to men like him.

Chloe asked, “Can we trust her?”

Naomi answered carefully.

“I trust that she wants a case more than she wants friends.”

Lorenzo gave a humorless smile.

“That may be the best recommendation anyone has received today.”

Naomi continued.

“But if you bring Shaw the Crown Ledger, she will expect something enormous.”

Chloe looked at Lorenzo.

He understood.

Evidence had a price.

So did protection.

He slowly nodded.

“Call her.”

Elena whispered, “Enzo.”

He turned toward his mother.

She looked terrified.

“Your father would never have done this.”

Lorenzo’s expression softened.

“I know.”

May you like

Then he looked at Chloe.

“That may be why we’re here.”
