Chapter 14 - The Price of Federal ProtectionRebecca Shaw arrived at St. Gabriel’s carrying no visible weapon and enough authority to make everyone in the basement uncomfortable.

Forty-eight.

Black wool coat.

No entourage.

She looked at Lorenzo first.

“Mr. Capello.”

“Ms. Shaw.”

“I’ve wanted to speak with you for six years.”

“Usually that sentence is more romantic.”

She did not smile.

Then she looked at Chloe.

“Ms. Evans.”

“Apparently.”

“You are legally dead.”

“I’ve been hearing that a lot today.”

Shaw placed a recorder on the table.

Chloe shook her head.

“Not yet.”

“Then why am I here?”

“To see evidence.”

“Evidence comes with chain-of-custody problems when delivered by a missing mafia boss, a legally dead contractor and a man who appears to have no current identity.”

Adrian looked mildly impressed.

“You found me quickly.”

“No. Naomi told me.”

“Less impressive.”

Shaw ignored him.

Chloe opened the Crown Ledger.

She showed Thomas’s memorandum first.

Then Carlo’s video.

Then the trust account.

Then the forged succession amendment.

Shaw’s skepticism disappeared gradually.

When Daniel Mercer’s name appeared on federal access logs, she stopped the presentation.

“Go back.”

Chloe did.

Shaw read silently.

“Where did this come from?”

“Thomas Evans.”

“Can its authenticity be established?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Original probate filings, bank logs, corporate records and testimony from Elena Capello.”

Elena stepped forward.

“I will testify.”

Lorenzo looked at his mother.

She had not told him beforehand.

Shaw turned toward her.

“Mrs. Capello, testimony may expose crimes committed by your late husband.”

“I know.”

“Possibly your son.”

Elena looked at Lorenzo.

“I know.”

He said nothing.

The room had reached a threshold.

Shaw looked at Lorenzo.

“What do you want?”

“My sister.”

“That’s not under federal control.”

“Victor Moretti and Samuel Reed are holding her.”

“Proof?”

“A recorded call.”

Adrian had captured it.

Shaw listened.

Victor demanding Chloe.

Samuel facilitating.

Isabella screaming in the background.

Shaw removed the headphones.

“I can mobilize agents.”

“No,” Chloe said.

Shaw stared at her.

“You invited a federal prosecutor and now you don’t want federal agents?”

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

“Victor expects surveillance. If law enforcement moves on Calumet before we identify the exact site, Isabella may be moved or hurt.”

Shaw looked at Lorenzo.

“And your alternative?”

“We go.”

“No.”

“That was not a request.”

“It becomes one if you want any agreement from my office.”

Lorenzo leaned back.

“Agreement.”

There it was.

Shaw folded her hands.

“Your evidence could support corruption, fraud, money laundering, conspiracy and homicide investigations.”

“And?”

“And the Crown Ledger also appears to contain records of offenses by Capello-controlled companies.”

Lorenzo’s face gave nothing.

“You want me.”

“I want truth that survives court.”

“Poetic.”

“I don’t care whether you like me.”

“That makes two of us.”

Chloe intervened.

“What would cooperation look like?”

Shaw looked at Lorenzo.

“Full preservation of the ledger. No destruction. No intimidation of witnesses. Access to relevant corporate records. Testimony where legally required.”

“And charges?”

“No immunity blanket.”

Lorenzo laughed once.

“Of course.”

“I can consider cooperation in charging recommendations.”

“So I surrender my organization and hope you feel generous.”

“You call it an organization. Federal indictments might use different nouns.”

Elena closed her eyes.

Chloe watched Lorenzo.

This was not merely legal risk.

It was identity.

Power.

Inheritance.

Everything his father taught him.

Everything Victor wanted to steal.

He could preserve it by fighting.

Or destroy part of it himself.

“What about Isabella?” he asked.

“If she is being held against her will, we protect her.”

“And Chloe?”

Shaw looked at Chloe.

“If evidence confirms threats and prior attempted murder, witness-protection options exist.”

Chloe’s mouth tightened.

Another identity.

Another disappearance.

“No.”

Shaw raised an eyebrow.

“I spent three years dead.”

“Witness protection is not death.”

“It can feel similar.”

Shaw did not argue.

Adrian asked, “What about my daughter?”

That shifted the room.

Shaw looked at him.

“If she is at risk due to your cooperation, protective measures can include her.”

Adrian nodded once.

Decision made.

Lorenzo noticed.

A father had fewer luxuries than a boss.

Shaw turned back.

“I need something now if you want me to delay overt action.”

Lorenzo looked at Chloe.

“What?”

“Access to one verified Crown Ledger directory.”

“No.”

Chloe’s answer surprised him.

Shaw turned.

“Why?”

“Because we haven’t verified whether Mercer has people inside your office.”

Shaw’s expression chilled.

“You brought me here.”

“And Mercer was a federal prosecutor.”

“He left four years ago.”

“He had allies.”

“Name one.”

“I don’t know.”

“Then don’t accuse my office without evidence.”

Chloe held her gaze.

“My father accused Mercer with evidence and died.”

The room went silent.

Shaw softened by one degree.

“What do you propose?”

“Offline copy. One folder. You choose three documents at random. We print them. No network transfer.”

Shaw considered.

“Reasonable.”

Lorenzo looked at Chloe.

“You don’t trust anyone.”

“That is not true.”

“Who do you trust?”

She looked at him.

“People after they give me a reason.”

Something passed between them.

Shaw noticed.

So did Elena.

No one commented.

They printed fourteen pages.

Shaw photographed nothing.

Took no drive.

Only numbered copies signed across the margins by Chloe, Elena and Adrian.

Chain of custody improvised but documented.

Before leaving, Shaw gave Chloe a secure number.

“If Isabella’s location is confirmed, call.”

Lorenzo spoke.

“And if I call?”

“I’ll answer.”

“Why?”

“Because I want you alive long enough to testify against people worse than you.”

He smiled faintly.

“Almost flattering.”

At the basement door Shaw stopped.

“One more thing.”

Everyone looked up.

“Daniel Mercer is holding a press conference at five.”

Chloe frowned.

“About what?”

“You.”

Shaw showed her phone.

A city announcement.

DEPUTY MAYOR MERCER TO ADDRESS SECURITY THREAT LINKED TO SOVEREIGN SHOOTING.

Security threat.

Chloe.

Mercer was changing the narrative.

Shaw read from the notice.

“He intends to identify you as a former rogue contractor suspected of involvement in multiple unsolved deaths.”

Chloe stared.

“He’s going to blame Calumet on me.”

“Yes.”

Adrian swore.

Shaw continued.

“And if public reports are accurate, Chicago police have just issued a warrant.”

“For me?”

“No.”

She looked at Lorenzo.

“For Chloe Evans.”

The charge appeared on her screen.

Not weapons.

Not assault.

Not even the restaurant shootings.

Murder.

Victim:

Rachel Vale.

Adrian’s dead wife.

Chloe looked at him.

His face had gone empty.

Mercer had finally found the perfect weapon.

May you like

He was going to make Adrian choose between the woman who saved Lorenzo—

and the woman he still loved enough to avenge.
