Chapter 29 - The Empty Chair

Years later, Elias still kept one chair empty at the dinner table.

It belonged to his father.

Nia noticed it every evening.

"Why keep it there?"

Elias answered:

"Because remembering someone isn't the same as refusing to move on."

Mateo sat nearby.

He had grown older but stronger.

He smiled.

"Thomas would have liked that."

Elias nodded.

The ranch had expanded.

The property remained theirs.

But more importantly, several families had regained land their ancestors had lost.

The old ledger was stored safely in an archive.

Copies existed in several places.

No one could erase the truth again.

One evening, Elias and Nia stood outside.

The sunset turned the mountains gold.

Nia asked:

"Do you ever think about that first day?"

"Every week."

"What would you tell yourself?"

Elias smiled.

"Don't pick up the rifle."

She laughed.

"Why?"

"Because you were about to have the most complicated week of your life."

Nia shook her head.

"It lasted more than a year."

"Fair."

They laughed together.

Then Nia became quiet.

"I was afraid of you."

"I know."

"I thought you might be like the men hunting me."

"I was afraid of you too."

She looked surprised.

"Why?"

"Because you arrived carrying a secret."

"And?"

"And I knew secrets had already destroyed my family."

Nia looked toward the empty chair inside.

"Not anymore."

"No."

Elias took one last look at the northern pasture.

The place his father had forbidden him to touch.

The place everyone had fought over.

It was just land now.

Grass.

Fence posts.

Wind.

May you like

Nothing more.

And somehow, that was the greatest victory of all.
