Chapter 23 - The Trial

The hearing lasted three weeks.
Vane's lawyers claimed the documents were fabricated.
The prosecution presented the ledger.
Mercer testified.
Clara Bell testified.
Mateo testified.
Nia told the court what happened to her father.
Elias presented his mother's journal.
The judge listened.
Then came the unexpected witness.
Silas Vane.
He entered the courtroom voluntarily.
Everyone stared.
Vane admitted his father had participated.
But he claimed Whitcomb had controlled the operation.
He produced correspondence proving it.
Elias watched him carefully.
"Why help us?"
Vane looked at him.
"Because Whitcomb was going to destroy me too."
The judge accepted the evidence provisionally.
The case expanded.
More names emerged.
More properties were reviewed.
By the end of the trial, dozens of fraudulent claims were overturned.
Elias's ranch was confirmed as legally his.
But the judge made one final statement.
"The evidence establishes a pattern of unlawful conduct extending beyond a single county."
Federal investigators would continue.
Outside the courthouse, Nia hugged her father.
Elias watched.
Mateo approached him.
"Thomas would be proud."
Elias looked toward the courthouse.
"I wish he could see this."
"He does."
Elias smiled sadly.
Then Mateo handed him a sealed envelope.
"Your father left this for the day the truth became public."
Elias opened it.
Inside was a final letter.
If you are reading this, Elias, I failed to protect you from the truth—but perhaps the truth has finally protected you.
Elias's eyes filled with tears.

The letter contained one final instruction.
