Chapter 28 - The Return

A year after the first gunshot, Nia returned to the canyon where Elias had found her.
Elias rode beside her.
The injured horse was long gone.
The mesquite tree remained.
Nia dismounted.
"This is where everything began."
Elias nodded.
She looked around.
"I thought I was dying."
"You almost were."
"I thought everyone was hunting me."
"They were."
"I thought I had nowhere to go."
Elias smiled.
"You found somewhere."
Nia looked at him.
"I found more than that."
They stood silently.
Then Nia removed the old leather pouch from beneath her coat.
The same one that had carried the map.
She opened it.
Inside was the original map.
Elias recognized his father's handwriting.
She folded it carefully.
"What will you do with it?"
"Keep it."
"Why?"
"Because it reminds me."
"Of what?"
"That fear can point you toward the truth."
Elias looked at the canyon.
"And sometimes toward home."
They returned to the ranch before sunset.
A letter waited on the porch.
It came from Washington.
Colonel Whitcomb had been sentenced.
The land investigation was officially closed.
For the first time in twenty-five years, there were no armed riders coming for the ranch.
No secret meetings.
No threats.
No hidden men watching from ridges.
Elias opened the letter.
Then he looked at Nia.
"It's over."
She smiled.
"No."
He raised an eyebrow.
She pointed toward the kitchen.
"Dinner isn't."
May you like
Elias laughed.
For the first time since the nightmare began, the house sounded like a home.
