Chapter 27 - Rebuilding

The ranch became more than a ranch.

Elias opened part of his land for displaced families.

Nia organized records.

Mateo taught younger people how to preserve oral histories.

Mercer retired from the courthouse.

Clara Bell donated her husband's remaining papers.

The truth became larger than any one family.

One afternoon, Elias found Nia repairing a fence.

"You know," he said, "you don't have to do that."

She looked at him.

"Neither do you."

He smiled.

She returned to work.

"You've changed."

"So have you."

"How?"

"You used to think protecting something meant hiding it."

Elias considered that.

"Maybe."

"And now?"

"Protecting something means giving people the truth they need to make their own choices."

Nia nodded.

"Your father learned that too late."

Elias looked toward the mountains.

"Maybe he knew earlier than I thought."

That evening, Elias opened Thomas's final letter again.

One sentence stood out.

A secret can protect a person for a while. Only truth can protect a future.

Elias finally understood.

His father's greatest act had not been hiding the chamber.

It had been preserving the evidence until someone could use it.

Nia sat beside him.

"What are you thinking?"

"That my father wasn't afraid of the truth."

"What was he afraid of?"

Elias looked at her.

"That the wrong person would find it first."

May you like

Nia smiled.

"Then he was right."
