Chapter 18 - The Public Hearing

The hearing filled the county hall.

Ranchers came.

Community members came.

Reporters came.

Corvin sat beside Lena and Tomas.

When called, he told the truth.

“My father accepted money from Harlan Mercer.”

A murmur spread through the room.

Corvin continued.

“He later used his own resources and hidden funds to repair the damage.”

He described the threats.

The altered records.

Marcus's betrayal.

Eleanor's secret trust.

The stolen community money.

He did not make his family look better than they were.

He did not make them worse either.

That honesty changed the room.

Tomas testified about the original agreement.

Daniel explained the legal structure.

Ruth described her father's actions.

Peter provided financial records.

The evidence became a complete picture.

Silas eventually testified remotely.

He admitted that greed had become an inheritance in his family.

“I believed the valley belonged to whoever could afford it.”

The judge later summarized the principle differently.

Land could be bought.

Promises could not simply be erased.

The court confirmed the stewardship trust.

Mercer-controlled claims were invalidated.

The recovered money was placed into the trust.

The protected spring remained available to the communities named in the charter.

Corvin retained his home and working ranch.

The financial pressure eased.

But there was one final family matter.

Corvin visited his father's grave.

He carried the silver medallion.

“I wish you'd told me,” he said.

The wind moved through the grass.

“I wish I'd known who you really were.”

He placed the medallion against the stone.

Then he realized something.

He had spent years wanting a perfect father.

What he had instead was a flawed man who made a terrible mistake and spent the rest of his life trying to repair it.

That was harder.

But it was real.

Lena waited at the gate.

Corvin joined her.

The future would not erase the past.

It would have to be built with it.
