Chapter 15 - Victor Hale

Victor Hale was a former land attorney.
He had advised Harlan Mercer decades earlier.
Now he lived under a different name in another state.
Investigators located him through financial records.
Victor agreed to speak.
He confirmed that the land agreement had been deliberately hidden.
He also admitted that Harlan had created shell companies to purchase debt attached to surrounding properties.
The plan was simple.
Control the debt.
Control the water.
Control the land.
Victor said Corvin's father became a problem because he refused to participate.
“What about Marcus?” Corvin asked.
Victor lowered his eyes.
“Marcus wanted money.”
“Did he know the whole plan?”
“Eventually.”
“Why did he stop?”
“Because your mother found out.”
Corvin felt his throat tighten.
Eleanor had confronted Marcus.
She threatened to expose him.
Marcus eventually helped preserve the evidence.
Victor gave investigators a storage location.
Inside was the final missing document.
The community trust charter.
It stated that the spring and surrounding corridor were to remain protected for generations.
The charter also named a governing council.
No single family could control it.
That changed the future.
Corvin could keep the ranch.
But he could not simply own the protected land.
It belonged under shared stewardship.
Tomas approved.
Lena approved.
Daniel approved.
Even Ruth supported it.
The court recognized the charter pending final review.
Silas faced civil claims and potential criminal charges related to fraud.
The financial records were sent to prosecutors.
Corvin stood beside the well at sunset.
He realized the thing his father had tried to protect was not property.
It was balance.
That night, however, a letter arrived.
It was from Silas.
He admitted his wrongdoing.
But he warned Corvin about one final secret.
Harlan had hidden a second account.
Money connected to the original land scheme.
May you like
The account had never been recovered.
And its beneficiary was not Silas.
