Chapter 10 - Box 417

The storage facility had been closed for years.

Box 417 remained under Corvin's father's name.

The manager opened it only after Miriam presented the proper legal documentation.

Inside were ledgers, photographs, maps, and a sealed envelope.

Corvin opened the envelope.

The letter was from Eleanor Vale.

She had written it shortly before her death.

I am afraid Marcus has chosen the wrong side.

Corvin read on.

Marcus believed the Mercer family would make him rich. He did not understand that Harlan intended to erase everyone who knew about the agreement.

Eleanor had preserved evidence in case Marcus betrayed them.

She had also named Daniel as successor trustee.

At the bottom was a handwritten sentence.

Corvin must never be told until he is old enough to choose without fear.

Corvin lowered the letter.

“I was thirty when my father died.”

Daniel nodded.

“You were still his son.”

“That isn't an answer.”

“No.”

Daniel looked ashamed.

“It was fear.”

The box contained one final item.

A small reel of audio tape.

Miriam arranged for it to be transferred.

The recording was old.

Corvin heard his father's voice.

Then Harlan Mercer.

The conversation was unmistakable.

Harlan admitted the land agreement existed.

He demanded that Corvin's father sign over his claim.

When Corvin's father refused, Harlan threatened Eleanor.

The recording ended with a sentence that changed everything.

“If anything happens to me, the land goes to the community.”

Corvin sat in silence.

His father had not abandoned the promise.

He had died protecting it.

But the recording also revealed that someone had been present during the conversation.

A third voice.

Marcus.

And Marcus had not defended his brother.

He had sided with Harlan.

The betrayal was now documented.

Miriam told Corvin that the recording could support a civil case, but she wanted more.

“We need proof of the current financial transfers.”

Ruth had access to some of them.

She agreed to help.

Meanwhile, Silas made his move.

A court notice arrived at the ranch.

He was seeking an emergency order to take control of the property.

The hearing was scheduled for Friday.

Corvin looked at Lena.

“We have three days.”

May you like

Lena nodded.

“Then we stop hiding.
