Chapter 14 - The Old Doctor

The doctor was ninety-one and living in a retirement community.

His name was Samuel Reed.

He remembered Corvin's father immediately.

“I wondered whether someone would come.”

Corvin showed him the note.

Samuel sighed.

“Your father was frightened.”

“Did Mercer threaten him?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you report it?”

“Because he asked me not to.”

Corvin struggled with anger.

Samuel explained that the threats were financial and legal, not physical.

Harlan had threatened to destroy the ranch through debt and litigation.

Your father believed the danger would pass.

It did not.

Samuel also revealed that Eleanor Vale had visited him.

She had asked him to keep medical records confidential unless Corvin ever needed them to understand his father's final years.

Corvin asked one question.

“Was my father guilty?”

Samuel answered carefully.

“He made mistakes.”

That answer mattered.

“He also spent years trying to correct them.”

Corvin thanked him.

On the drive home, Miriam explained that this distinction could matter legally.

Intent, restitution, and later conduct could affect civil claims.

But morally, Corvin knew something else.

He could stop defending his father as perfect.

The truth was stronger.

His father had done wrong.

Then he had chosen to repair what he could.

That was the legacy Corvin wanted.

At the ranch, Lena found an old marker beside the well.

It bore the broken spearhead.

Beneath it were initials.

C.T.

Corvin realized his father had carved it himself.

He touched the stone.

For years, he had thought the ranch represented inheritance.

Now he understood it represented responsibility.

That evening, authorities informed them that Silas had agreed to cooperate.

But he had one condition.

He wanted protection from a man named Victor Hale.

Corvin had never heard the name.

Silas claimed Victor was the person who had organized the surveillance and pushed him to acquire the land.

The conspiracy was larger than the Mercer family.

And Victor knew where the original community trust documents were stored.
