Chapter 28 - Hayes RetiresSergeant Major Hayes retired after thirty-two years.

At his ceremony, he asked me not to speak.
I spoke anyway.
Briefly.
I said:
“Raymond Hayes made mistakes.”
He stared at me.
The audience went very quiet.
Then:
“He also did something leaders too often avoid. He documented them, corrected what he could, and allowed other people to learn from them.”
Hayes shook his head.
Afterward:
“You couldn't just say nice things?”
“That was nice.”
“You remain impossible.”
“Retirement suits you.”
“Terrible influence.”
We laughed.
Then he asked about Bruno.
“Sleeping.”
May you like
“Smartest Marine either of us knows.”
“Absolutely.”
