Chapter 14 - Hayes TestifiesSergeant Major Hayes voluntarily testified in the command investigation.

He did not protect himself.

“I knew Corporal Mercer had prior issues.”

“Did you know all of them?”

“No.”

“Should you have?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you?”

“I accepted assurances from subordinate leaders.”

“Because?”

“Because I trusted them.”

“Was Colonel Mercer’s relationship relevant?”

Hayes paused.

“Yes.”

“How?”

“I was more cautious about appearing biased against the commanding officer's son.”

That answer mattered.

Trying not to appear unfair to Tyler produced unfairness to everyone else.

Bias can work through overcorrection too.

Hayes continued:

“I told myself equal treatment meant pretending his father didn't exist.”

“What should you have done?”

“Recognized the conflict and moved disciplinary review outside the chain earlier.”

The investigator nodded.

Exactly.

Neutrality does not always mean ignoring context.

Sometimes it means building procedures that account for it.

Hayes received administrative counseling for leadership failures.

He was not destroyed.

He was held accountable.

He accepted it.

Then returned to work.

That was what professional responsibility should look like.
