Chapter 17 - Rock Chooses a Side

Dale Rock agreed to wear a wire.
His attorney hated the idea.
Rock insisted.
“I helped build this.”
Renata stood across from him.
“You don’t get to call cooperation redemption.”
“I know.”
“You unlawfully arrested me.”
“Yes.”
“You participated in intimidation.”
“Yes.”
“You falsified records.”
“Yes.”
“You took money.”
Rock swallowed.
“Yes.”
Renata watched him.
“Then why help now?”
His answer took time.
“My son is twenty-seven.”
“The boy Keene threatened?”
“Yes.”
“He knows?”
“No.”
“About you?”
“He thinks I’m a good cop.”
Rock’s voice cracked slightly.
“I can’t control what he thinks after this. But I can control whether I lie one more day.”
Renata did not soften.
“Good. Because prosecutors will still charge you.”
“I know.”
The operation was simple.
Rock would call Keene from a monitored device and claim he heard Boone was taking federal agents to Arthur Bell.
The false location would be an abandoned roadside motel.
Only a suspected leak would know.
Rock dialed.
Keene answered.
“Why are you calling me?”
Rock sounded frightened.
“They’re moving Boone.”
“Where?”
“I don’t know.”
Pause.
“Dale.”
Rock looked at Renata.
She nodded.
“Miller’s Rest Motel.”
Silence.
“How do you know?”
“Deputy at holding talked.”
Keene’s voice became cold.
“Keep your mouth shut.”
“What about Bell?”
Another silence.
Then:
“Bell is no longer your concern.”
Rock’s face changed.
Renata wrote a note.
ASK WELLER.
Rock said, “What about Shepherd?”
Keene cursed.
“You say that name again and I’ll personally make sure your son learns what kind of man raised him.”
Rock flinched.
Renata saw twelve years of fear return instantly.
But Rock stayed with it.
“Weller is exposed.”
“Weller can take care of himself.”
“Can he?”
Keene lowered his voice.
“Listen carefully. You have one chance left to be useful.”
Rock looked at Renata.
“What?”
“Tell them Boone lied about parcel six.”
“Why?”
“Because there’s nothing there anymore.”
“Where did it go?”
Keene realized the danger.
The line went silent.
Then disconnected.
Isaac checked the signal.
“He didn’t take the bait.”
Renata shook her head.
“He gave us something better.”
“There’s nothing there anymore.”
Rock removed the wire.
“What does that mean?”
Renata thought of the underground room.
The empty shelves.
Whatever had been stored there had been moved.
“Where would Keene move evidence?”
Rock’s eyes narrowed.
“Callaway land.”
Renata looked at him.
“Why?”
“There’s an old storm tunnel under the south parcel.”
She had never heard of it.
Rock explained.
“Built when the county planned a rail extension. Project stopped in the seventies.”
“Daniel knew?”
“Probably.”
Renata grabbed the property survey.
A faint dotted line crossed beneath the creek.
It connected parcel six directly to the warehouse corridor.
The land Hollow Ridge desperately wanted was not merely surface access.
It covered the center of an underground route.
Daniel had blocked both.
Isaac said, “We need a warrant.”
“We need probable cause tied to specific evidence.”
Rock spoke.
“I can give it.”
Renata turned.
“I moved crates there.”
“When?”
“Three years ago.”
“You said you never entered the lower room.”
“I didn’t.”
“This tunnel?”
“Yes.”
“What crates?”
“Federal seals. Controlled evidence.”
“You just remembered?”
Rock’s shame returned.
“I remembered. I didn’t admit it.”
Renata’s anger sharpened.
He had chosen truth only in pieces.
But pieces could still build a case.
“What else?”
Rock looked at her.
“Keene had a key.”
“To what?”
“A steel gate under your mother’s property.”
Renata stared.
“My mother’s been living above their route for years.”
“Yes.”
The warrant application moved fast.
Before it was signed, Renata received another call.
Lillian’s security detail.
“Your mother found something in the basement.”
“What?”
“A wall panel.”
Renata’s blood chilled.
“What kind?”
“Steel.”
She grabbed her jacket.
“Get her out of the house.”
“She refuses.”
“Then make her angry.”
“Ma’am?”
“She’ll survive angry.”
Renata ran for the door.
Behind her, Rock called out.
“Callaway.”
She turned.
He looked genuinely afraid.
“Keene has another key.”
“So?”
Rock stood.
“If he thinks you found that tunnel, he won’t come for the ledger.”
Renata understood.
“He’ll come for my mother’s property.”
Rock shook his head.
“No.”
May you like
His face darkened.
“He’ll come to destroy whatever is still underneath it.”
