Chapter 16 - The Eight-Minute Order

Isaac Reed had been ordered to wait eight minutes before responding to Renata’s detention.

He found the message while reconstructing the timeline.

The directive came through an internal channel.

VERIFY LOCAL INCIDENT BEFORE DEPLOYMENT.

Authorization:

T. WELLER.

Isaac slammed his palm onto the table.

Renata looked up.

“When?”

“Two minutes after Claire called 911.”

“So headquarters knew I was detained.”

“Yes.”

“And Weller stopped you.”

“For eight minutes.”

“Why did you disobey?”

Isaac’s expression was grim.

“I heard Claire’s recording come through dispatch. You identified yourself clearly.”

“You believed me.”

“I knew your voice.”

“Weller?”

“He said local police reported an armed impersonator.”

Renata understood.

The false report gave Weller bureaucratic cover.

“And after eight minutes?”

“I moved anyway.”

“That’s why it took twenty-three.”

“Travel time plus his delay.”

The number had haunted the investigation since Route 9.

Now it had a purpose.

Twenty-three minutes had not been accidental.

Eight had been purchased from inside the government.

Renata sat opposite Isaac.

“You hid this.”

“I didn’t realize Weller personally issued the delay until now.”

“But you knew somebody did.”

“Yes.”

“Isaac.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

He met her eyes.

“I thought if I told you before I verified it, you’d stop trusting the agency.”

She gave a tired laugh.

“That decision is not yours.”

“No.”

“Everybody keeps deciding what truth I can survive.”

“I’m sorry.”

Renata believed him.

That did not erase the mistake.

“You’re staying on the case.”

Isaac looked surprised.

“Why?”

“Because you admitted it before someone exposed it.”

A knock came.

Professional Responsibility investigators entered with federal prosecutors.

By afternoon Thomas Weller had been placed on administrative leave.

Not arrested.

Not yet.

He surrendered his service weapon and credentials.

He smiled when Renata passed him in the corridor.

“This will embarrass the Service.”

She stopped.

“Corruption embarrasses the Service.”

“Public scandal damages everyone.”

“That sounds like Keene.”

Weller’s smile faded.

“You think Daniel was a hero?”

Renata’s pulse changed.

“You don’t get to say his name.”

“He stole confidential material.”

“He documented crimes.”

“He was reckless.”

Renata stepped closer.

“So were you when you went to Box 314.”

For the first time, Weller looked startled.

Only briefly.

But enough.

“You don’t know what you think you know.”

“No.”

Renata smiled faintly.

“That must terrify you.”

She walked away.

That evening, prosecutors obtained authorization to search Weller’s financial records.

Money moved through consulting companies into Hollow Ridge entities.

Not enough alone to prove everything.

Enough to tighten the circle.

Then Claire called.

“My apartment alarm went off.”

Renata stood.

“Are you there?”

“No. Hotel.”

“Good.”

“Someone broke in.”

“Nothing was stolen.”

Claire hesitated.

“They left something.”

“What?”

“A photograph.”

Renata’s chest tightened.

“Of what?”

“You.”

The photograph had been taken that morning at Lake Arden.

Renata standing on the old dock.

The implication was clear.

Someone had followed them despite federal security.

On the back, one sentence:

DANIEL SHOULD HAVE LET THE WATER KEEP IT.

Renata looked at Isaac.

“Keene knows we found the ledger.”

“How?”

“Someone watched us.”

Isaac’s jaw tightened.

“We had six vehicles.”

“Doesn’t matter.”

Claire asked quietly over speakerphone, “Am I the reason they know?”

“No.”

“Because of my video?”

“No.”

Renata meant it.

Claire had exposed what corruption hoped nobody would see.

That made her a target, not a cause.

“We’re moving you.”

Claire exhaled.

“I’m getting tired of secure hotels.”

“Stay tired.”

“Very comforting.”

“It’s the best offer you’re getting.”

After the call, Renata looked at the photograph again.

Someone had taken it from across the lake.

Long lens.

Close enough to know their movements.

The investigation had been penetrated.

Isaac said, “We need to shrink the team.”

“Agreed.”

“To how many?”

Renata thought of Daniel.

James.

Lillian.

Rock.

People who told too little because they trusted the wrong people.

“Four.”

“Names?”

“You. Me. Professional Responsibility lead. Prosecutor.”

“What about operations?”

“They get only what they need.”

Isaac nodded.

Renata turned the photograph over again.

“Then we feed everyone else something different.”

Isaac understood.

“A leak test.”

“Yes.”

“What information?”

Renata looked at the map of Hollow Ridge.

“We tell them Curtis Boone agreed to show us where Arthur Bell is hiding.”

“But Boone doesn’t know.”

“Exactly.”

“And if Keene reacts?”

“We find the leak.”

Isaac leaned back.

“Dangerous.”

“So was waiting eight minutes.”

He accepted the point.

May you like

Renata picked up her phone.

“This time, nobody buys twenty-three.”
