Chapter 13 - The Chief Who Came to Help

Warren Keene arrived at the federal command post carrying coffee.
Renata almost admired the nerve.
“Thought your people could use something hot.”
Isaac took the cardboard carrier from him and set it aside untouched.
Keene was sixty-three, silver-haired, careful and grandfatherly.
Nothing about him looked like the man Rock described.
That was probably useful.
“I’m embarrassed by what Officer Rock did,” Keene said.
Renata remained standing.
“Are you?”
“Deeply.”
“You called him during the stop.”
“I returned a call from one of my officers.”
“You told him to move someone.”
Keene blinked.
“I don’t recall that.”
“We have audio.”
His expression barely shifted.
“Then perhaps context matters.”
“It always does.”
Keene smiled faintly.
“I hear you’re good.”
“So did you come to test that?”
“I came to cooperate.”
Renata placed Daniel’s crash report on the desk.
“Let’s cooperate.”
Keene looked down.
The change was tiny.
One tightening beside his mouth.
“Your brother.”
“You remember.”
“Of course. Tragic night.”
“You were there.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Duty supervisor.”
“Rock says you arrived before EMS.”
“Possibly.”
“He says Daniel was alive.”
Keene sighed.
“Dale Rock is facing serious charges. Men in that situation rediscover memories that serve them.”
Renata leaned forward.
“My brother’s preserved blood sample shows no alcohol.”
Keene’s eyes sharpened.
“That’s surprising.”
“You authorized the chain of custody.”
“Twelve years ago.”
“Convenient.”
“Accurate.”
Renata placed another paper down.
Hollow Ridge payment records.
Keene did not touch them.
“You received consulting payments through South Creek Security.”
“That company provided legitimate off-duty opportunities.”
“To police officers?”
“Yes.”
“From a company moving stolen evidence?”
Keene laughed.
“That’s a serious accusation.”
“It is.”
“Do you have serious evidence?”
Renata watched him.
He was fishing.
He did not know what Box 314 contained.
Good.
She pulled the papers back.
“Enough for today.”
Keene smiled.
“I thought so.”
He stood.
At the door he paused.
“Deputy Callaway.”
“Yes?”
“Your mother has suffered enough.”
Renata’s blood cooled.
Keene continued gently.
“You should consider whether digging into ancient mistakes is worth causing her more pain.”
Isaac moved before Renata did.
“Chief.”
Keene looked at him.
“You just referenced the mother of a federal officer in the middle of an active corruption investigation.”
“I expressed sympathy.”
“Do it again through counsel.”
Keene left.
Renata watched him cross the parking lot.
“He threatened her.”
“Yes.”
“And wanted me to know he could reach her.”
“Yes.”
Isaac picked up his phone.
“I’m doubling the protection detail.”
A technician entered.
“We got something from Hollow Ridge.”
“What?”
“Security video.”
Renata frowned.
“They kept cameras?”
“Remote server. Company forgot to delete cloud backups.”
The oldest surviving footage was four years old.
Not enough to show Daniel.
Enough to show Keene.
Enough to show Rock.
Enough to show seized evidence boxes unloaded from county vehicles.
Then they found Thomas Weller.
Six separate visits.
On one recording he handed Keene a sealed federal envelope.
On another he supervised the transfer of two storage crates.
Isaac whispered, “That gives us conspiracy.”
“Not necessarily knowledge of contents.”
“It gives us probable cause for more.”
Renata nodded.
They sent the material to federal prosecutors and the Office of Professional Responsibility.
No premature arrest.
No rushed mistake.
Build it until it could survive lawyers, hearings and attacks.
Claire arrived under escort.
“You’re supposed to be at the secure hotel.”
“I found something.”
“That sentence is becoming dangerous.”
Claire opened her laptop.
She had reviewed every frame captured before Renata’s stop.
“The Tahoe passed me twice.”
Renata frowned.
“Twice?”
Claire played the first clip.
Thomas Weller drove from the cabin.
Seven minutes later the same vehicle appeared in the opposite direction.
“But Weller was heading toward town,” Isaac said.
“He turned around.”
Claire nodded.
“He came back.”
The second clip showed the Tahoe stopping near Rock’s hidden cruiser.
A man stepped out.
Not Weller.
Warren Keene.
Renata stared.
“Keene was in Weller’s vehicle.”
“Yes.”
“So both were at the cabin.”
“Yes.”
Claire advanced three frames.
A third figure could be seen in the rear seat.
Only profile.
Gray beard.
Curtis Boone.
Isaac leaned closer.
“Boone told us he was hiding from them.”
Renata felt anger replace surprise.
“He lied.”
Her phone rang.
Detention facility.
A deputy sounded tense.
“Deputy Callaway, Boone is requesting you.”
“Tell him I’ll see him later.”
“He says it’s urgent.”
“Everything Boone says is urgent.”
The deputy lowered his voice.
“He says Chief Keene knows he’s in federal custody.”
Renata looked at the screen showing Boone riding in Weller’s Tahoe.
“How?”
May you like
“He says because he was working with Keene until yesterday.”
The betrayal had just changed direction again.
