Chapter 12 - Box 314

The bank opened early under federal security.

Renata inserted Daniel’s brass key into Box 314 at 7:36 a.m.

The manager inserted the bank key beside it.

Both turned.

The steel drawer slid out.

Renata stared at it.

Twelve years.

Daniel had expected her to reach this moment.

Inside were no dramatic stacks of cash.

No weapon.

No confession.

There was a family photograph.

Renata and Daniel at ages fourteen and eleven beside their father’s old fishing boat.

Daniel grinning.

Renata pretending not to.

Beneath it lay a flash drive, notarized documents and a sealed letter.

Her name was written across the envelope.

Isaac remained several feet away.

“This one’s yours.”

Renata opened it.

Ren,

If you ever read this, I was right about something and probably wrong about how I handled it.

A laugh escaped her before grief caught it.

That sounded like Daniel.

I know you think I’m trying to keep the farm because Dad loved it. I’m not. Somebody is using the Hollow Ridge purchases to control a route between the old county storage sites and private warehouses.

Dad believed the client was legitimate until I showed him copies. He quit. He’s scared.

I’m scared too.

Renata stopped.

Daniel had never admitted fear to her.

She kept reading.

I called you because I needed somebody outside this place who wouldn’t listen when Keene told them everything was fine.

I also wanted to say I’m sorry.

Her vision blurred.

You didn’t abandon us by leaving. I was angry that you were brave enough to go.

Renata lowered the letter.

Isaac looked away deliberately.

She continued.

If something happens, don’t make Mom pay for being afraid. And don’t assume every dirty person started dirty. Fear turns into compromise one decision at a time.

The drive has copies. The original ledger is somewhere safer.

You’ll know where.

—Danny

Renata pressed the paper to the table.

For twelve years their last conversation had ended in anger.

Now Daniel had given her another ending.

Not clean.

Not enough.

But real.

The flash drive contained spreadsheets.

Payments.

Dates.

Badge numbers.

Corporate transfers.

Property acquisitions.

And a list of initials.

D.R.

Dale Rock.

W.K.

Warren Keene.

T.W.

Thomas Weller.

Amounts beside Weller’s initials were enormous.

Hundreds of thousands over time.

Isaac whispered, “Jesus.”

The ledger was not complete.

Daniel had copied six months.

But it was enough to establish structure.

Then Renata found another file.

A photograph.

Thomas Weller stepping from a black Tahoe beside Chief Keene.

Metadata: September 16.

The day before Daniel died.

Another photograph showed Boone nearby carrying a crate.

Renata stared.

“He was there.”

Isaac nodded.

“Weller.”

A final audio file contained James Callaway.

Their father.

His voice trembled.

“Daniel, I made the call. Weller answered. Said Haines will contact me.”

Daniel replied, “Do you trust him?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because he asked what evidence we have before he asked whether we were safe.”

Silence.

Then James said, “I think I told the wrong man.”

The recording ended.

Renata sat motionless.

Isaac said, “Your father knew.”

“Yes.”

“He may have warned Daniel.”

“Not fast enough.”

A bank employee knocked urgently.

“Federal agents at the front entrance.”

Isaac frowned.

“Our team’s already here.”

The employee shook his head.

“They say they’re from headquarters.”

Renata and Isaac exchanged a look.

“Names?”

“Deputy Director Weller.”

Silence.

Thomas Weller had come personally.

Renata returned everything to the box except the letter and family photograph.

“Secure this room.”

Isaac asked, “You want to meet him?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Renata closed the steel box.

“Because he doesn’t know what we found.”

Weller waited in the lobby wearing an expensive navy suit and the patient expression of a man accustomed to controlling rooms.

He smiled at Renata.

“I heard there was a sensitive evidence issue.”

Renata smiled back.

“There is.”

“I’ll take custody.”

“No.”

The smile on his face barely changed.

“Excuse me?”

“This evidence is connected to an active obstruction investigation.”

“I’m your regional director.”

“Which is why Professional Responsibility will want the chain of custody especially clean.”

That landed.

Weller studied her.

“Renata, after what happened yesterday, you may not be in the best state to assess—”

“My emotional state isn’t evidence.”

His eyes hardened for half a second.

Then the smile returned.

“Of course.”

He turned to Isaac.

“Commander Reed, outside.”

Isaac did not move.

Weller’s tone sharpened.

“That was an order.”

Renata watched them leave.

Then she noticed Weller glance toward Box 314.

Not toward the vault generally.

Toward the exact row.

He knew.

Renata’s phone vibrated.

A message from Claire Morgan.

I FOUND THE SUV DRIVER.

Renata opened the attached photograph.

Claire had enlarged one frame from her roadside video.

May you like

The black Tahoe’s driver was partially visible through the side window.

Thomas Weller.
