Chapter 9 - Nora’s Secret

Nora arrived at the estate twenty-three minutes after Ethan called.

She saw Daniel Mercer at the dining table and stopped.

“I assume this is about the email.”

Ethan’s expression hardened.

“You knew?”

“I knew you would eventually find it.”

“Did you impersonate me to get Amelia’s letter?”

“No.”

“The request came from your email.”

“My account was compromised.”

“Everyone’s account is suddenly compromised.”

Nora flinched.

Sarah stayed near the window.

Mercer said, “The message included details about the trust that few people knew.”

Nora removed her coat.

“What details?”

“That Amelia had left sealed instructions.”

Nora became still.

“I didn’t know that.”

Ethan studied her.

“Who did?”

“You. Mercer. Maybe Marcus?”

Mercer shook his head.

“Marcus knew the trust existed. Not the letter.”

Nora sat.

“Then how would someone know?”

Sarah thought about Amelia’s missing notebook page.

“Maybe the torn page mentioned it.”

Everyone looked at her.

She explained.

If Amelia had written that Mercer held a letter, whoever removed the page could have learned exactly what to request.

Nora whispered, “Victoria had access to Amelia’s boxes.”

Ethan said, “So did you.”

Nora looked at him.

The accusation hurt.

“I helped pack Amelia’s things.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“No, Ethan. I did not tear out the page.”

“Did you know Victoria was asking Amelia about Leo’s trust?”

“No.”

“Did you know Lucas approached Amelia about selling the company?”

Nora’s face changed.

That was enough.

Ethan leaned forward.

“You knew.”

“Not then.”

“When?”

“After Amelia died.”

“How?”

“Lucas told me.”

Sarah watched Nora’s hands tighten.

“He approached me seven months ago.”

“Why?”

“Because the company’s margins were weakening.”

Ethan laughed.

“So you and Lucas have been discussing a sale for seven months.”

“Yes.”

“And Victoria?”

“She knew.”

“Of course she did.”

Nora stood suddenly.

“You want to make this simple because simple is easier to hate. Fine. Hate me. But the company was in trouble.”

“You hid it.”

“I was trying to prevent a panic.”

“You lied.”

“Yes!”

The word echoed through the dining room.

Nora’s eyes filled.

“Yes, I lied. I concealed numbers. I delayed telling the board how close one credit covenant was. I believed a refinancing would close before anyone needed to know.”

Ethan stared at her.

“It didn’t.”

“No.”

“And Lucas knew.”

“He found out through banking contacts.”

“So he used it.”

“He offered a solution.”

“A sale.”

“A deal that would protect the company.”

“By putting hundreds of jobs under private-equity control.”

Nora slammed her palm onto the table.

“And bankruptcy protects them?”

Silence.

Sarah had never seen Nora lose control.

She looked suddenly less like an executive and more like an exhausted older sister carrying something too large.

“I was scared,” Nora said. “Dad built Hale Biomedical. Amelia believed in it. You were grieving. I thought if I could fix one thing without asking you to survive another crisis, I should.”

Ethan said quietly, “You decided I was too broken to know the truth.”

“Yes.”

The answer hurt them both.

Nora wiped her face.

“But I never forged anything. I never touched Leo’s trust. And I would never help anyone hurt that child.”

Mercer asked, “Who besides Lucas knew you were hiding the financial problem?”

“Marcus.”

“Victoria?”

Nora hesitated.

“Eventually.”

“When?”

“About five months ago.”

Sarah calculated.

That was around the time Victoria moved belongings into the estate.

Ethan said, “What changed after she learned?”

Nora thought.

“She started talking constantly about continuity.”

“Estate planning?”

“Company continuity. Family control. Emergency authority.”

Sarah asked, “Did she suggest replacing Sarah?”

Nora looked surprised.

“She complained about Sarah.”

“What did she say?”

“That Sarah had too much influence over Leo.”

Ethan said, “Influence?”

“She said Leo responded to Sarah more than anyone else and that it wasn’t healthy.”

Sarah almost laughed.

“He was an infant.”

“I didn’t say I agreed.”

“When did she start saying it?”

“Three months ago.”

Sarah remembered those months.

Victoria had begun criticizing feeding schedules.

Moving toys.

Changing nursery routines.

Once, she had told Sarah:

“When I’m his mother, things will be different.”

At the time Sarah thought it was insecurity.

Now it sounded like a declaration.

Nora reached into her handbag.

“There is something else.”

She placed a USB drive on the table.

Ethan stared.

“What is that?”

“Copies of emails between me, Marcus, Lucas, and Victoria about Meridian.”

“Why do you have them?”

“Because after the forged document appeared, I stopped trusting the company server.”

Sarah asked, “Is there anything about Leo?”

“I don’t know. I copied everything before IT locked Marcus’s account.”

Ethan looked at the drive but did not touch it.

“We give it to the forensic team.”

Nora nodded.

“I already hired one.”

“You did what?”

“An independent cyber-forensics firm. Not company IT.”

For the first time, Ethan’s anger softened slightly.

Nora noticed.

“I know I betrayed you by hiding the debt.”

“Yes.”

“But I’m not betraying Leo.”

Ethan said nothing.

Nora stood.

Before leaving, she paused beside Sarah.

“I owe you an apology.”

“For what?”

“I believed Victoria when she said you were possessive about Leo.”

Sarah considered that.

“Why?”

“Because she always said it like she was worried.”

Sarah nodded.

“That’s how good lies survive.”

Nora left.

That night, the forensic firm examined the USB.

At 1:14 a.m., Ethan received an urgent call.

The analyst had found an encrypted archive attached to one of Victoria’s emails.

Inside was a draft agreement between Meridian Capital and a private entity called VC Advisory Holdings.

VC.

Victoria Crane.

The agreement promised VC Advisory a $24 million transaction fee if Meridian successfully acquired Hale Biomedical.

There was one condition.

The deal had to close before December 31.

And the document had been signed six months earlier.

Before Ethan proposed to Victoria.
