Chapter 13 - What Amelia Saved

The drive remained sealed until Detective Ruiz and the forensic team arrived.

No one wanted to damage the chain of custody.

Sarah stood beside Ethan as Priya Shah connected a forensic copy to an isolated laptop.

The drive contained hundreds of foundation records.

Invoices.

Bank statements.

Approval logs.

Emails.

And one audio file.

The file was dated nine days before Amelia died.

Ethan’s hands tightened when he saw the date.

Priya asked, “Do you want law enforcement to review it first?”

Detective Ruiz nodded.

She listened through headphones.

Her expression did not change.

Afterward she removed them.

“Mr. Hale, you should hear this.”

Ethan sat.

Sarah remained behind him.

Amelia’s voice filled the room.

Weak.

Breathless.

But unmistakable.

“Victoria, I know about the foundation payments.”

Silence.

Then Victoria.

“You should be resting.”

“Don’t do that.”

“Do what?”

“Talk to me like I’m confused.”

Sarah closed her eyes.

Amelia continued.

“Three point eight million dollars.”

Victoria laughed softly.

“Those were approved expenditures.”

“Not by me.”

“Your electronic credentials were used.”

“I was in the hospital during two approvals.”

Another pause.

Then Victoria’s voice changed.

Less gentle.

“You’re looking at details that don’t matter anymore.”

“They matter to me.”

“You have weeks, Amelia.”

Ethan flinched.

Sarah gripped the back of his chair.

Amelia answered:

“And Leo has decades.”

Silence.

Victoria said, “This isn’t about Leo.”

“It became about Leo when Lucas started asking how much of Hale Biomedical he would inherit.”

“My brother is an investor.”

“Your brother is a predator.”

Victoria’s voice hardened.

“Be careful.”

“Why?”

“You don’t have the strength for another fight.”

The recording ended shortly afterward.

No confession.

No direct admission of fraud.

But the conversation showed Amelia had confronted Victoria.

Ethan stood and walked out.

Sarah followed him into the hallway but did not speak.

He leaned against the wall.

“She knew she was dying.”

Sarah’s eyes burned.

“Yes.”

“And Victoria used it.”

“Yes.”

“I left them alone together.”

“You trusted someone Amelia once trusted too.”

He looked at Sarah.

“I should have seen it.”

“Amelia barely saw it until the end.”

That mattered.

Victoria had not arrived as an obvious enemy.

She had been Amelia’s friend.

That was the betrayal.

Back inside, Priya found additional files.

One spreadsheet linked foundation payments to consulting contracts.

Another contained notes Amelia had apparently compiled.

Several included initials.

V.C.

L.C.

M.R.

Victoria Crane.

Lucas Crane.

Marcus Reed.

Nora’s initials did not appear.

Ethan noticed.

So did Nora.

For the first time since the investigation began, a piece of evidence excluded rather than implicated her.

She sat silently.

Priya opened an email Amelia had saved as a PDF.

It was from Marcus Reed.

Amelia, I recommend you discontinue any internal review while undergoing treatment. The transactions were authorized within foundation policy. Further inquiry could create unnecessary legal exposure.

Ethan whispered, “Marcus knew.”

Nora said, “At minimum, he knew Amelia was investigating.”

Detective Ruiz asked for the original server records.

Priya explained some might still exist in backups.

Then she found something stranger.

A folder named LATER.

Inside were photographs of documents.

One showed a preliminary Meridian Capital term sheet dated nearly two years earlier.

Long before the company’s current liquidity crisis.

Lucas had wanted Hale Biomedical before the crisis existed.

Another photograph showed handwritten notes from Victoria.

Sarah recognized the elegant handwriting from wedding lists left around the estate.

The notes read:

Need E emotionally aligned.

A resistant on trust.

S still obstacle.

Sarah stared.

“S.”

Ethan looked at her.

“You.”

Nora whispered, “She was planning around Sarah while Amelia was alive.”

The phrase emotionally aligned appeared three times.

Once beside Ethan.

Once beside Nora.

Once beside the board.

Victoria had reduced people to leverage points.

Ethan sat again.

“What was the crisis for?”

Nora frowned.

“What?”

“Meridian wanted us two years ago. We said no. Now suddenly we have a liquidity problem severe enough to force a sale.”

Nora looked at the financial statements.

“You think someone created it.”

“I think we need to find out.”

The forensic accountants expanded their review.

By morning, they discovered that Hale Biomedical’s cash pressure did not come only from expensive expansion.

Several supplier contracts had been renegotiated at unusually unfavorable terms.

Three vendors demanded accelerated payments.

Two were connected through holding companies to Meridian portfolio businesses.

Nora stared at the chart.

“Lucas.”

Ethan said, “Can he legally do that?”

“Not if agreements were manipulated through undisclosed conflicts.”

Detective Ruiz raised a hand.

“Corporate fraud questions will need separate investigators. Don’t jump to conclusions.”

But a picture was forming.

Meridian had wanted Hale Biomedical.

Victoria stood to receive twenty-four million dollars.

Marcus had advised both sides.

Foundation money had flowed toward Crane entities.

Company pressure had intensified.

And Leo’s twenty-one percent voting interest had become a target.

Then Priya discovered the most disturbing file on Amelia’s drive.

It was a scanned letter addressed to Marcus.

Amelia had written:

If anything happens to my ability to act before this investigation is completed, you are not to permit Victoria Crane access to my financial records, my foundation credentials, or Leo’s trust documents.

Marcus had received it.

His handwritten response appeared at the bottom.

Understood. I will protect the family.

Ethan stared at the signature.

Marcus had known exactly what Amelia feared.

Yet after her death, he helped Victoria draft a plan to control Leo’s shares.

Sarah looked at Ethan.

“He didn’t just betray you.”

Ethan nodded.

“He betrayed her instructions.”

His phone buzzed.

May you like

A message from Marcus.

We need to meet privately. I am prepared to tell you what Victoria and Lucas did. But I need legal protection first.
