Chapter 15 - The Mistake She Needed

Marcus refused to answer further without negotiating formally with prosecutors.
But his final sentence changed the investigation.
Sarah needed to make one mistake no one could forgive.
Detective Ruiz returned to the Hale estate with a warrant to obtain additional smart-home records.
Investigators searched access logs, door records, environmental controls, and camera metadata.
Sarah reconstructed the previous three months.
There had been strange incidents.
Small ones.
At the time, each looked accidental.
One evening Leo’s bottle warmer had been set far hotter than usual.
Sarah noticed before using it.
Another morning the nursery window was left open during cold weather.
Victoria blamed Tom Alvarez.
Once Leo’s prescribed skin cream disappeared, then reappeared inside Sarah’s supply cabinet.
Two weeks earlier, the stroller brake had been left unlocked.
Sarah caught it before placing Leo inside.
None had caused harm.
All could have been blamed on carelessness.
All happened when Victoria was in the house.
Detective Ruiz wrote each one down.
“Why didn’t you report these?”
“They didn’t look connected.”
“That’s common.”
Ethan stood by the fireplace.
“She was building a pattern.”
“Possibly,” Ruiz said.
“Stop saying possibly.”
Ruiz looked at him.
“I will keep saying it until evidence allows me to say something stronger.”
Ethan apologized.
Sarah appreciated Ruiz’s discipline.
The smart-home records provided the next break.
On the morning the nursery window had been left open, Victoria’s phone credential unlocked the upstairs hall.
On the evening of the bottle warmer incident, she entered the kitchen three minutes before its temperature setting changed.
The stroller incident occurred outside camera range.
But the estate door log showed Sarah had been downstairs while Victoria was alone near the mudroom.
Circumstantial.
But consistent.
Then BrightNest Systems responded to the evidence-preservation request.
Deleted video backups still existed.
Not all of them.
But enough.
The company provided encrypted copies directly to investigators.
Detective Ruiz watched first.
Then she invited Ethan.
Sarah was allowed to view clips involving her.
The first missing recording began at 3:21 p.m.
Victoria entered the drawing room carrying her phone.
She sat near the crib.
Leo was asleep.
Victoria spoke quietly.
“No. Ethan still hasn’t signed it.”
A voice from the phone was too faint to identify.
Victoria replied:
“Because Sarah keeps making him cautious about anything involving Leo.”
Pause.
“I know Friday matters.”
Another pause.
“I said I’ll handle her.”
Sarah stared at the screen.
The second clip began at 3:27.
Victoria opened a cabinet.
She removed the iron.
Why was an iron stored in the drawing room?
Sarah remembered.
Victoria had asked a housekeeper to leave it there after steaming curtains that morning.
The setup had happened hours earlier.
Victoria spoke again into the phone.
“I don’t need him seriously hurt.”
Ethan shut his eyes.
Sarah’s stomach turned.
Victoria continued.
“I need something frightening enough that Ethan blames her.”
The room became perfectly silent.
The person on the other end spoke.
Victoria’s response:
“Then we replace Sarah, document negligence, and he signs because he wants the whole thing quiet.”
Sarah felt tears fill her eyes.
Not because she had doubted herself.
Because Leo’s fear had been planned.
Detective Ruiz stopped playback.
“That is significant evidence.”
Ethan’s voice shook.
“Who is on the phone?”
“We’re working on that.”
The next clip showed Victoria testing the iron away from the crib.
Steam.
Then she looked toward the camera.
But because she believed it pointed toward the window, she did not seem concerned.
At 3:41, Leo stirred.
Victoria moved the iron closer.
The final clip was the one Ethan originally saw.
Sarah running in.
Victoria lowering the iron.
The confrontation.
The recording continued after Ethan entered.
Then, at 3:47, Victoria moved toward the hallway.
While Ethan was focused on Leo, she briefly looked at her phone.
At 3:48, the deletion occurred remotely from Hale Biomedical.
Victoria herself could not have been using Marcus’s office computer at that moment.
Someone else deleted the clips for her.
Ruiz said, “That gives us two participants.”
Ethan looked at Marcus’s statement.
“He said Victoria had his token.”
“Which someone else could use.”
“Lucas.”
“Maybe.”
“Nora?”
“Maybe.”
Sarah looked at the phone records Ruiz had requested.
“Can you identify who Victoria called at 3:21?”
Ruiz did not answer.
That meant she likely knew but was not ready to disclose it.
Hours later, the answer came.
Victoria’s carrier records showed a twenty-eight-minute call beginning at 3:19 p.m.
The number belonged to a prepaid phone.
That phone had connected to cellular towers near Hale Biomedical headquarters.
Investigators obtained security footage from the building garage.
At 3:15, Lucas Crane arrived.
He never used the main entrance.
At 3:31, he followed an employee through the restricted executive elevator.
At 3:46, a hallway camera captured him entering Marcus Reed’s office using the cloned badge.
At 3:49, he left.
The evidence now formed a line.
Victoria created the incident.
Lucas remained on the phone.
Lucas accessed Marcus’s computer.
The recordings vanished.
Fourteen minutes later, the forged trustee document was uploaded using the same security token.
Sarah whispered, “They did both at once.”
Ethan nodded.
Create the crisis.
Erase the proof.
File the solution.
Detective Ruiz’s phone rang.
She listened for nearly a minute.
Then hung up.
“What?” Ethan asked.
Ruiz looked at him.
“Officers went to speak with Victoria.”
“And?”
“She isn’t at her apartment.”
“Where is she?”
“We don’t know.”
Sarah felt uneasy.
Ruiz continued.
“Her attorney says he hasn’t been able to reach her since this morning.”
Ethan’s phone buzzed.
A message from Victoria.
You’re making a terrible mistake. Ask Nora what she promised Lucas before you decide who betrayed you.
Attached was a photograph.
It showed Nora signing a document with Lucas Crane.
The date was three months earlier.
