Chapter 8 - The Hidden AccountThe investigators traced the threatening messages to a temporary online number.

No name.

No obvious location.

Victoria’s primary phone was switched off.

Her apartment in Richmond had been empty for weeks because she had effectively lived at Ethan’s estate.

Her credit cards showed no activity after midnight.

“She prepared,” Reyes said.

Ethan sat inside the study with Sarah and attorney Thomas Avery.

“She knew she might have to disappear.”

“Possibly.”

Sarah remembered Victoria’s confidence during the confrontation.

Who do you think he’ll believe?

“She expected something to happen yesterday.”

Reyes nodded.

“That’s becoming more likely.”

A cybersecurity specialist named Priya Shah arrived that afternoon.

Ethan gave her permission to examine the smart-home system.

Within two hours she discovered another account.

It had administrator privileges.

Username: VHALE-GUEST.

Ethan frowned.

“I didn’t create that.”

Priya checked the logs.

“It was created four months ago.”

“By whom?”

“Your master account.”

“I didn’t do it.”

“Someone who had your password did.”

Sarah knew who.

Victoria.

The account could access cameras, door locks, climate controls and room-activity logs.

Ethan stared at the screen.

“She could watch everything?”

“Most common areas.”

“The nursery?”

“Yes.”

Sarah felt sick.

Priya opened login records.

The account had connected regularly between midnight and four in the morning.

Sometimes from inside the house.

Sometimes remotely.

“She watched Leo.”

Priya remained cautious.

“She accessed the camera feed.”

“That’s watching him.”

Ethan stood.

Sarah could see rage building.

Priya continued.

“She also downloaded footage.”

“What footage?”

“Mostly you and Sarah.”

Sarah’s stomach tightened.

“Me?”

Priya opened file logs.

Clips of Sarah carrying Leo.

Sarah sitting with him when he was sick.

Sarah feeding him.

Sarah comforting him.

Hundreds.

“What was she doing with these?”

Reyes answered before anyone else.

“Building evidence.”

Ethan turned.

“Evidence of what?”

“A narrative.”

Sarah understood.

“She wanted to make me look obsessed with Leo.”

Reyes nodded.

“Victoria’s complaint says you behaved as though the child belonged to you.”

Ethan’s voice hardened.

“Sarah works here. Of course she cares for him.”

“But isolated clips can be framed however someone wants.”

Priya opened another folder.

Its label made everyone stop.

S.M. INCIDENTS.

Inside were edited clips.

Sarah carrying a crying Leo away from Victoria.

Sarah standing between Victoria and the crib.

Sarah arguing with Victoria in the kitchen.

Each clip began after Victoria provoked the situation.

Each ended before context became clear.

Ethan whispered:

“She planned this for months.”

Reyes nodded.

“Looks that way.”

Sarah’s mind went back through every disagreement.

The day Victoria insisted Leo should attend a loud dinner party when he was sick.

Sarah objected.

Victoria later filmed Sarah carrying him upstairs.

The afternoon Victoria tried to feed Leo something his pediatrician had said to avoid.

Sarah intervened.

Victoria recorded Sarah removing the bowl.

Each event had been engineered.

“You were never the target of spontaneous anger,” Reyes said.

“She was documenting you.”

Sarah looked at Ethan.

“Why?”

Nobody answered.

Priya continued searching.

Then she found an encrypted folder.

She could not open it immediately.

“What’s inside?”

“I don’t know.”

The folder was named PHASE TWO.

Ethan looked toward Reyes.

“What was phase one?”

Sarah thought of Claire.

Infiltration.

Engagement.

Access.

Phase two might have involved Leo.

Or Sarah.

Or both.

Priya eventually recovered a partial text file from temporary storage.

It contained a list.

Remove S.M.

Establish household instability.

Marriage.

Guardianship documentation.

Board access.

Ethan read the words slowly.

Sarah felt as though the temperature had dropped.

Remove S.M.

Sarah Miles.

Her.

“Remove means fire me,” Sarah said.

Reyes looked at her.

“Probably.”

But nobody sounded certain.

Ethan pointed at item four.

“What guardianship documentation?”

Avery immediately understood.

“If Ethan married Victoria, she could petition for legal recognition in certain emergency situations involving Leo.”

“But she wouldn’t automatically control his trust.”

“No.”

“Then why?”

Avery looked at item five.

“Board access.”

Ethan’s company had voting shares held partly in trust.

Leo’s future holdings were significant.

Victoria seemed to want not merely money.

She wanted influence over Cole Heritage Properties.

Just as Marcus Vale once had.

Ethan sat down.

“This is revenge.”

Sarah shook her head.

“Revenge and money.”

Avery agreed.

“And possibly restoration of what Marcus Vale believes was taken from him.”

Reyes pointed at the computer.

“But we still need proof linking Marcus to Victoria’s actions.”

Priya raised a hand.

“I may have something.”

She opened login metadata.

The hidden account had been accessed remotely from an IP address registered to a private office suite in Richmond.

Tenant:

Vale Strategic Consulting.

Ethan stared.

Marcus Vale was not in Florida.

He was twenty miles away.

Reyes stood immediately.

“I’m calling this in.”

Sarah looked again at the list.

Phase two.

Remove Sarah.

Establish household instability.

Marriage.

Guardianship.

Board access.

The steam incident suddenly made terrible sense.

If Leo became distressed and Sarah rushed in, Victoria could claim Sarah assaulted her.

If Sarah was removed from the house, one of the few people who distrusted Victoria would disappear.

Then Victoria could continue toward marriage.

Toward legal influence.

Toward Ethan’s company.

Sarah looked at the final item.

Board access.

This was not a jealous fiancée losing control.

May you like

This was a plan.

And it had been running for years.
