Chapter 14 - Father and DaughterVictoria entered the hospital at 1:12 a.m.

She wore a baseball cap, glasses and a long coat.
She still looked enough like herself for facial-recognition review to flag the security image.
Officer Reyes waited near Marcus’s room.
Victoria never reached it.
She spotted two uniformed officers at the end of the hall and turned.
A nurse later said Victoria remained completely calm.
She did not run.
She simply entered an elevator.
By the time police reached the lobby, she was gone.
But before leaving, Victoria sent Marcus a message.
They found it on his phone.
You blamed me.
Marcus replied:
They trapped me.
Victoria:
You said Leo would never be involved.
Marcus:
YOU changed the plan.
Victoria:
Because your plan failed.
Marcus:
Come back. We can fix this.
Victoria:
There is no “we” anymore.
Sarah read the transcript the next morning.
“This confirms they planned something together.”
Reyes nodded.
“But also that Victoria escalated it.”
“What was Marcus’s original plan?”
“We finally got part of it.”
Marcus had agreed to speak after learning Victoria abandoned him.
His story was self-serving but useful.
The original goal, he claimed, was to remove Sarah from Ethan’s household.
Victoria would provoke an argument.
She would accuse Sarah of physical aggression.
Marcus would anonymously send selected video clips to a gossip outlet suggesting Ethan’s household was unstable.
Ethan, terrified of scandal, would dismiss Sarah.
Then Victoria would persuade him to accelerate the wedding.
Avery asked:
“Why?”
Marcus looked at investigators.
Because marriage gave Victoria access.
To Ethan.
To company events.
To discussions involving future control.
Marcus believed he could pressure Ethan into granting Victoria a board position.
Then use her influence to negotiate a “restoration” of the Vale family’s historic equity.
Ethan listened to a recorded interview.
“He thought I’d just give him shares?”
Reyes said:
“He thought Victoria could persuade you.”
Sarah shook her head.
“That’s not a plan. That’s obsession.”
Marcus apparently believed the Cole company had been built partly from opportunities he helped create before his fall.
He wanted recognition.
Money.
Power.
An apology.
Maybe even revenge.
But investigators asked the most important question.
Why Leo?
Marcus claimed Leo was never supposed to be endangered.
Victoria was meant to create a noisy confrontation in the nursery.
Perhaps knock over a harmless object.
Sarah would rush in.
Victoria would accuse her of aggression.
Instead, Victoria chose the iron.
Reyes looked at Ethan.
“Marcus says he told her not to involve the baby physically.”
“Do you believe him?”
“Only where evidence supports him.”
The messages between them suggested they argued about the plan beforehand.
Marcus had written:
Nothing near the child. The point is Sarah.
Victoria replied:
Sarah only reacts when Leo is involved.
Marcus:
Find another way.
Victoria:
You wanted results.
Sarah felt cold reading that.
Victoria understood Sarah perfectly.
She knew only one thing could guarantee Sarah would abandon caution.
A frightened baby.
Victoria had used Sarah’s compassion as a trigger.
Ethan left the room.
Sarah found him outside on the terrace.
“You shouldn’t listen to all of this alone.”
He looked at the gardens.
“I invited her here.”
“You didn’t know.”
“Claire tried to warn me.”
“Claire died before she could.”
“Margaret saw the family history.”
“And you never saw the letter.”
Ethan shook his head.
“I should have protected Leo better.”
Sarah remained quiet for a moment.
Then:
“You can protect him now.”
Ethan looked at her.
“That doesn’t erase yesterday.”
“No.”
Sarah would not offer false comfort.
“But parenting isn’t about never failing to see danger. Nobody can do that.”
Ethan looked down.
“It’s about what you do after you finally see it.”
He nodded slowly.
Inside, Leo laughed with the nurse.
The sound reached the terrace.
Ethan closed his eyes.
Then another call came.
Reyes.
Victoria had contacted a television journalist.
She wanted to tell her story publicly.
Her message claimed:
I am being persecuted by the Cole family because I discovered the truth about their financial crimes.
Sarah almost smiled from disbelief.
“She’s changing the story.”
Reyes nodded.
“When one narrative collapses, people sometimes build another.”
Victoria was no longer denying deception.
She was reframing it as whistleblowing.
She claimed Marcus was a victim.
Margaret concealed illegal share transfers.
Sarah possessed stolen company documents.
Ethan used police influence to silence her.
“And Leo?” Ethan asked.
Reyes looked grim.
“She says the incident was an accident exaggerated by Sarah.”
Sarah’s hands tightened.
Victoria was trying to turn the public into a jury before a real court ever heard the case.
The journalist had not aired anything yet.
But social media accounts were already posting fragments.
COLE BILLIONAIRE ACCUSED OF COVER-UP.
FIANCÉE FLEES POWERFUL FAMILY.
HOUSEKEEPER AT CENTER OF MYSTERY.
Sarah read one headline.
“So now I’m the villain again.”
Ethan looked at her.
“Not in this house.”
Sarah met his eyes.
The words mattered.
But she knew the battle had moved beyond the house.
Victoria no longer needed Ethan to believe her.
May you like
She only needed enough strangers to doubt the truth.
And in the modern world, doubt traveled much faster than evidence.
