Chapter 15 - The Public StoryBy noon, reporters waited outside the estate gates.

A helicopter circled once before security complained.

Ethan refused to make an immediate public statement.

His board demanded one.

His investors demanded one.

His communications director wanted to release the baby-monitor footage.

Officer Reyes strongly objected.

“Not while the investigation is active.”

Ethan agreed.

Sarah was relieved.

Leo’s fear did not need to become public entertainment.

Instead, Ethan released five sentences.

An incident involving my infant son occurred inside my home.

The matter is being investigated.

Video evidence has been provided to law enforcement.

I will not release footage involving my child.

My only priority is his safety and the integrity of the investigation.

Victoria’s supporters called the statement evasive.

Others praised Ethan for protecting Leo’s privacy.

Sarah’s name appeared online anyway.

Old photographs from charity events were posted.

One caption read:

THE MAID WHO BROKE UP A BILLIONAIRE WEDDING.

Sarah put her phone away.

She had never wanted to be a public person.

Her sister called from North Carolina.

“Are you safe?”

“Yes.”

“Come stay with me.”

“I can’t leave Leo.”

A pause.

“You hear yourself, right?”

Sarah closed her eyes.

Her sister was not criticizing.

She was worried.

Sarah had spent years making other people’s homes safe.

Perhaps she had forgotten she was allowed to think about her own safety.

“I’m being careful.”

“Sarah.”

“I promise.”

After the call, Ethan found her in the library.

“You can leave.”

She looked at him.

“I don’t mean fired.”

“I know.”

“If this is too much, you can stay somewhere else. Security will protect you.”

Sarah considered it.

Then she shook her head.

“I’m not running because Victoria wants me gone.”

Ethan sat opposite her.

“I owe you an apology.”

“For what?”

“For every time Victoria suggested you were interfering and I didn’t shut it down.”

Sarah sighed.

“You were trying to build a new family.”

“I was trying so hard that I stopped asking whether it was healthy.”

Sarah looked toward the photograph of Margaret above the fireplace.

“She would have yelled at you.”

Ethan laughed unexpectedly.

“Yes.”

“Probably for an hour.”

“Two.”

For a moment, tension eased.

Then Priya Shah entered with her laptop.

“I found something.”

The encrypted PHASE TWO folder had finally opened.

Inside were emails between Victoria and Marcus.

Hundreds.

Dating back eighteen months.

Before Victoria officially met Ethan.

They discussed Claire.

Ethan’s schedule.

The company.

Margaret’s trust.

Sarah.

One email from Marcus said:

Claire suspects you. Withdraw immediately.

Victoria replied:

If I withdraw now, we lose access.

Marcus:

There will be another opportunity.

Victoria:

Not if she tells Ethan.

Two weeks later, Claire gave birth.

She died shortly afterward.

Nothing in the messages suggested Victoria caused or intended Claire’s death.

That mattered enormously.

Ethan looked at Reyes.

“So we stop there.”

“Yes.”

Sarah was glad.

It would have been easy to turn tragedy into accusation.

But facts mattered.

Claire’s death remained a medical tragedy.

Victoria’s wrongdoing began elsewhere.

Another email was dated seven months later.

Victoria:

I met him.

Marcus:

And?

Victoria:

He’s easier to talk to than I expected.

Marcus:

Do not confuse the assignment with affection.

Sarah looked at Ethan.

He stared at the screen.

A later email:

Victoria:

He’s still grieving.

Marcus:

Use it.

Victoria:

Don’t say that.

Marcus:

You wanted our life back.

Another:

Victoria:

Leo smiled at me today.

Marcus:

He is not relevant.

Victoria:

He is Ethan’s entire world.

Marcus:

Then understand the leverage.

Sarah remembered the word on the Vale-house wall.

LEO = LEVERAGE.

Victoria had resisted Marcus at first.

At least in some messages.

But over time her language changed.

Victoria:

Sarah blocks everything.

Marcus:

Remove her.

Victoria:

Ethan trusts her more than anyone.

Marcus:

Then destroy the trust.

Victoria:

I know how.

Sarah stopped reading.

She had seen enough.

Priya scrolled to the final week.

Marcus:

Camera disabled?

Victoria:

Yes.

Marcus:

Keep it simple.

Victoria:

Sarah needs to react physically.

Marcus:

No risk to Leo.

Victoria:

I know what I’m doing.

Sarah whispered:

“No, she didn’t.”

Or perhaps she did.

The next email was sent two hours before the incident.

Victoria:

Today.

There was no reply.

Reyes closed the laptop.

“That’s enough to support conspiracy-related charges alongside the false report and child-endangerment investigation.”

Ethan asked:

“Then why isn’t she in custody?”

“Because we have to find her.”

The answer came sooner than expected.

At 5:32 p.m., police received a call from the television journalist Victoria had contacted.

Victoria had arrived at the studio.

She wanted a live interview.

She had one condition.

No police.

The journalist secretly informed authorities.

Reyes was already moving.

Ethan stood.

“I’m coming.”

“No.”

“She’s talking about my family.”

“And she may be unstable.”

“I need—”

“Ethan.”

Reyes held his gaze.

“Stay with Leo.”

That ended the argument.

Sarah watched police vehicles leave the estate.

For the next hour, they heard nothing.

Then Reyes called.

Victoria had entered the television studio.

She was sitting beneath bright lights.

Microphone attached.

Camera ready.

She believed she was about to tell the entire city her version of the story.

May you like

But before the interview could begin, the studio doors opened.

And Victoria Hale finally saw Officer Reyes walking toward her.
