Chapter 6 - The Message Before the WeddingThe deleted message still existed.

Not in Taylor's texts.
In her cloud notes.
Marcus found it because Taylor remembered drafting it there first.
She resisted showing him for nearly an hour.
Eventually, standing in the kitchen with Nicole beside her, she unlocked the folder.
The title was dated May 19, 2023.
The night before their wedding.
Marcus opened it.
He read silently.
Marcus, there is something I have failed to tell you because I am terrified that telling you will cost me you. Andre wasn't just my college boyfriend. He was my fiancé. We were ten days from a courthouse wedding when he died.
Marcus stopped.
He looked at Taylor.
She was crying quietly.
He continued.
I received his life insurance. Most of the money I used toward our house came from that. I know I should have told you before we signed anything.
Marcus's throat tightened.
Then he reached the paragraph Nicole had described.
Sometimes I still love him. I don't mean that I don't love you. I mean grief has made me feel like loving you betrays him, and loving him betrays you. I don't know how to cut one life out of myself to make the other clean.
Marcus closed his eyes.
There it was.
The most honest thing Taylor had ever written about Andre.
And he had never received it.
He kept reading.
If you want to postpone the wedding after reading this, I will understand. If you want to leave, I will hate it, but I will understand that too. You deserve to choose me knowing all of me.
Marcus lowered the phone.
The kitchen was silent.
He looked at Nicole.
"She was going to give me a choice."
Nicole nodded through tears.
"And you helped take it away."
"Yes."
Taylor whispered, "I made the decision."
Marcus turned toward her.
"You both did."
Taylor stepped forward.
"I was standing in the hotel room wearing the robe from my bridal party. Everybody was downstairs. My mother had spent money she didn't have. Your family had flown in."
"So?"
"I panicked."
"Then postpone."
"I thought you'd leave."
"Maybe I would have."
Taylor flinched.
Marcus did not soften it.
"That's what choice means."
Nicole whispered, "I told her what happened with Andre didn't matter because he was gone."
Marcus looked at her.
"And you were wrong."
"I know."
"No. You didn't just get bad advice wrong. You decided a living person had fewer rights than a dead person's memory."
Nicole cried openly.
Marcus handed the phone back.
Taylor didn't take it.
"Read the last part," she said.
Marcus hesitated.
He opened the note again.
The final lines read:
I want to marry you. Not because Andre died. Not because I'm lonely. Not because you're safe. I want you because you are Marcus. But I am afraid you are marrying a version of me I created so you wouldn't see how damaged I still am.
Marcus read it twice.
He wished it made things easier.
Instead it hurt more.
Because Taylor had known exactly what she was doing.
She had identified the deception in perfect language.
Then proceeded.
"You understood," he said.
Taylor nodded.
"You understood that I was marrying a version of you you had created."
"I was afraid."
"And three years later, you named our son after him."
"I thought becoming a mother would finally close something."
"So you opened it wider."
Taylor sank into a chair.
Marcus stayed standing.
"Why Andre?"
She stared at the table.
"I heard his heartbeat at the first ultrasound."
Marcus frowned.
"The baby's?"
"Yes."
"And?"
Taylor wiped tears away.
"When Andre was dying, I wasn't at the hospital yet. Evelyn called me. She put the phone near him."
Marcus's face softened despite everything.
"I could hear the monitor."
Taylor's voice broke.
"I listened until it stopped."
Marcus looked down.
That was a kind of trauma he could understand without excusing anything.
"When I heard our baby's heartbeat, I thought about him."
"And instead of telling me you were triggered—"
"I pretended everything was fine."
Marcus sat.
For the first time since discovering the photograph, his anger made room for sadness that belonged to Taylor rather than to himself.
"You needed help."
"I know."
"You still do."
"I know."
He looked toward the nursery.
"We cannot use our son as therapy."
Taylor nodded.
Marcus rested his hands on the table.
"I want us to contact somebody about changing his name."
Taylor's face tightened, but she didn't object.
"What name?"
"I don't know."
A strange memory surfaced.
During the pregnancy, Marcus had suggested Miles.
Taylor had laughed and said it sounded like a jazz musician.
Marcus had liked it.
She had pushed Andre instead.
"Maybe Miles," he said.
Taylor looked at him.
"You wanted Miles."
"Yes."
"I remember."
"Don't agree because you're scared of me."
"I'm not."
"Good. Because I don't want to rename him out of revenge either."
Taylor studied him.
"Then why?"
Marcus glanced toward the staircase.
"Because every time I say Andre right now, I'm thinking about a secret instead of my son."
Taylor closed her eyes.
That sentence finally seemed to reach a place anger could not.
"I'm sorry."
Marcus didn't answer.
Apologies were beginning to sound like receipts for debts nobody could repay.
His phone buzzed.
His mother, Valerie.
How's Baby Andre? Need Grandma to bring dinner?
Marcus stared at the message.
His family didn't know.
His mother had handmade the blanket with the name Andre stitched into one corner.
Marcus suddenly realized how public the deception had become.
Not because people knew.
Because they didn't.
Every congratulatory card.
Every personalized gift.
Every social-media comment.
All built on the belief that Marcus and Taylor had jointly chosen the name.
Taylor saw his face.
"What?"
"My mother."
Taylor paled.
Marcus held up the screen.
"How many people are we going to have to tell?"
"We don't have to tell everyone why."
"No."
"What?"
"We don't owe everybody details, but I'm not lying anymore."
Taylor nodded reluctantly.
Marcus looked at Nicole.
"That includes you."
Nicole nodded.
"No more cover stories."
"I understand."
Marcus's phone buzzed again.
This time the sender was unknown.
A local number.
He nearly ignored it.
Then a text appeared.
Marcus, this is Evelyn Bell. Taylor told me you found out. I'm sorry. There are things she needs to tell you before you make any decisions. Please do not let her tell you Andre was perfect. He wasn't.
Marcus stared.
Taylor saw the name.
Her face went white.
"Why is Evelyn texting you?"
Marcus looked at his wife.
"Apparently because everybody associated with Andre knows how to reach into my marriage except me."
Then he read the next message.
And before Taylor tells you otherwise, I never wanted your son named after mine.
A third message arrived.
I begged her not to do it.
May you like
Marcus lifted his eyes.
Taylor looked as though the dead had finally begun speaking back.
