Chapter 23 - Nicole's ConsequenceNicole lost a relationship because of the Reed marriage.

Her boyfriend, Jamal, had been dating her for eighteen months.

He knew Nicole spent significant time helping Taylor.

He did not know why.

When the online rumor spread, Nicole told him her part.

Deleting Taylor's confession before the wedding.

Keeping the name secret.

Helping manage the scholarship.

Jamal was disturbed.

"You helped somebody marry a man without telling him the truth?"

Nicole tried to explain.

Jamal heard the explanation as justification.

They argued for days.

Eventually he ended the relationship.

Nicole arrived at Taylor's house crying.

Taylor immediately began blaming herself.

Marcus stopped her.

"This is Nicole's relationship."

Taylor looked at him.

Nicole nodded.

"He's right."

Taylor struggled visibly.

Her instinct was to rescue.

Instead she asked, "What do you need?"

Nicole cried harder.

"I don't know."

"I can listen."

So she did.

Nicole admitted something she had never said.

After Andre died, she had resented Taylor.

Everyone focused on Taylor's grief.

Nicole had lost someone too.

Andre had been her friend.

But Nicole became the strong sister.

She organized the funeral clothes.

Handled calls.

Stayed overnight.

She never received space to grieve.

"I think helping you became how I made my grief matter," Nicole said.

Taylor stared.

Nicole continued.

"If you needed me, then I had a role in what happened."

Taylor began crying.

"I'm sorry."

"I know."

"No, I turned you into my emotional emergency contact for seven years."

Nicole laughed through tears.

"You absolutely did."

Marcus listened from the kitchen, giving them privacy without leaving them alone in case Miles needed help.

Nicole said:

"I deleted that message because I wanted the crisis to end. I wanted you married. Happy. Somebody else's responsibility."

Taylor froze.

Nicole covered her mouth.

"That sounded horrible."

"No," Taylor whispered. "It sounded honest."

Nicole cried.

"I was tired."

Taylor moved closer.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because you were the one who almost lost everything."

Taylor shook her head.

"You lost things too."

They hugged.

Marcus stepped outside.

The family was finally learning that suppressed truths did not disappear.

They became roles.

Obligations.

Resentments.

Jamal did not return.

Nicole accepted it.

"I can't demand he trust my judgment after hearing what I did," she told Marcus later.

"You can still believe you're capable of better judgment."

"I hope so."

"That's what I'm trying to figure out about Taylor."

Nicole nodded.

"How do you know if somebody changed?"

Marcus looked toward the nursery.

"You don't know."

"Helpful."

He smiled.

"You watch."

Nicole considered it.

"Time."

"Time and repeated behavior."

She nodded.

At the next marriage session, Marcus said the same thing.

Taylor asked, "How much time?"

The counselor looked at her.

"That's another attempt to control uncertainty."

Taylor sighed.

"I hate you."

The counselor smiled.

"Common."

Marcus laughed.

Taylor did too.

Later that night, Marcus entered the bedroom.

Taylor was sitting on the bed reading.

She looked surprised.

"I need my charger."

"Desk."

He retrieved it.

Then stopped.

His side of the bed remained untouched.

Taylor had not spread into it.

His pillow stayed where he left it.

He noticed his framed photograph with Taylor from their wedding still on the dresser.

Andre's things were gone.

Not erased.

Relocated.

"Do you want to sleep here?" Taylor asked.

Marcus looked at her.

"I don't know."

"You don't have to."

He appreciated the immediate retreat.

Marcus sat on the edge.

"Do you?"

Taylor swallowed.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because you're my husband and I miss you."

No guilt.

No tears.

No Andre.

No grand speech.

Marcus nodded.

"I'll sleep here."

Taylor went still.

"Okay."

"Sleep."

"Right."

"No sex."

"I know."

Marcus laughed.

"You answered very fast."

"I am trying to demonstrate healthy boundaries."

He smiled.

They slept several feet apart.

At three in the morning, Miles cried.

Both woke simultaneously.

"I'll go," Marcus said.

Taylor murmured, "Thank you."

When he returned twenty minutes later, she was asleep.

Marcus stood beside the bed.

For years he had believed intimacy meant knowing everything important about the person beside you.

Now he understood intimacy differently.

You could never know everything.

Trust was not perfect knowledge.

It was faith that the other person would not deliberately control what you were allowed to know.

Marcus lay down.

Half asleep, Taylor reached across the mattress.

Her hand touched his.

She did not wake.

Marcus could have moved away.

Instead he let their fingers remain together until morning.
