Chapter 20 - The Night Before Court

The evening before the hearing, Derrick could not sleep.
Jayden was with Aisha.
The house felt too quiet.
Renee arrived with takeout and no invitation.
“You look terrible.”
“Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.”
They ate at the kitchen table beside stacks of exhibits Maya had instructed Derrick not to obsess over.
Renee ignored that advice immediately.
“So this one is the private school?”
“Yes.”
“This is the emergency card?”
“Yes.”
“This is the Turner tax thing?”
“Yes.”
“This woman really loved paperwork.”
Derrick laughed despite himself.
Then his face changed.
“What if I’m doing the same thing?”
Renee stopped eating.
“What?”
“Turning a family problem into paper.”
“You didn’t start this.”
“That doesn’t answer me.”
She waited.
Derrick looked at the old birth announcement sitting beside the court file.
“Dad wrote ‘know where you come from.’”
“Yeah.”
“What if I’ve been treating that like it means surname?”
Renee leaned back.
“Where do you think Jayden comes from?”
Derrick thought.
“Aisha.”
Renee nodded.
“Me.”
“Marcus is part of where he’s growing.”
“Yep.”
“Grandpa.”
“Obviously.”
“Both houses.”
“Yes.”
Derrick sighed.
“Then maybe the name really isn’t the point.”
“It was never the point.”
He looked at her.
“The point was somebody making him carry a story he didn’t choose.”
Renee smiled.
“There you go.”
At Aisha’s house, a different conversation unfolded.
Jayden sat on her bed while she folded laundry.
“Mom?”
“Hmm?”
“Do you like Cole?”
The question surprised her.
“It’s a name.”
“You don’t like it.”
Aisha placed a shirt down.
“Why do you say that?”
“You make a face.”
She almost denied it.
Then stopped.
“You notice too much.”
Jayden smiled.
“Dad says that.”
Aisha sat beside him.
“I had complicated feelings about your dad for a long time.”
“Because he left?”
“Yes.”
“Did he leave me?”
“No.”
The answer came fast.
Jayden looked relieved even though he had heard it before.
Aisha continued.
“He left our relationship.”
“Was that bad?”
“It hurt.”
“Was he bad?”
“No.”
Aisha surprised herself.
“He made mistakes.”
“So did you?”
She laughed softly.
“Yes.”
“What mistakes?”
“Some are adult mistakes.”
“Like my name?”
Her smile disappeared.
“Yes.”
Jayden stared at his hands.
“Why did Turner make you happy?”
Aisha thought carefully.
“Because I thought matching names would make us feel more connected.”
“Did it?”
Aisha’s eyes filled.
“For me, maybe.”
“For me it was confusing.”
“I know now.”
Jayden leaned against her.
“I love Marcus.”
“I know.”
“And Dad.”
“I know.”
“And you.”
Aisha hugged him.
“I know.”
“Can everybody stop being scared?”
Her throat tightened.
“What do you mean?”
“You’re scared Dad will leave.”
Aisha froze.
“Dad’s scared you’ll make him disappear.”
Her breathing stopped.
“And Marcus is scared you’ll get mad if he says Dad is right.”
Aisha stared at her son.
Dr. Harris had warned them.
Children map adult emotions.
Jayden had mapped all of them.
“What are you scared of?” she whispered.
Jayden thought.
“That everybody will make me prove who I love.”
Aisha began crying.
She pulled him close.
“I’m sorry.”
Jayden hugged her back.
“You cry a lot now.”
She laughed through tears.
“I’ve noticed.”
Later, after Jayden slept, Aisha went downstairs.
Marcus was preparing coffee for the morning.
“I’m withdrawing final authority.”
He stopped.
“What?”
“I’m telling my lawyer.”
Marcus stared.
“Are you sure?”
“No.”
He almost smiled.
“But I’m doing it.”
“Why?”
Aisha looked upstairs.
“Because if I win it for the reasons I asked, Jayden learns the person most afraid gets the most control.”
Marcus set down the mug.
“That’s… very specific.”
“I’ve had therapy.”
He laughed quietly.
Then Aisha’s face became serious.
“I still want the court to clarify the process.”
“That seems reasonable.”
“I still think Derrick can be controlling.”
“He can.”
She raised an eyebrow.
Marcus smiled.
“He’s not here.”
Aisha almost laughed.
She called her attorney.
The conversation lasted twenty minutes.
When it ended, Aisha looked lighter.
Across town, Derrick received a message from Maya.
Major development. Aisha is withdrawing request for final educational authority. Hearing still proceeding on enforcement and remaining issues.
Derrick stared.
Renee read his expression.
“What?”
He showed her.
Renee smiled.
“You won.”
Derrick shook his head.
“No.”
He looked toward the old birth announcement.
“Not yet.”
May you like
Because tomorrow was no longer about defeating Aisha.
It was about what rules would remain after both of them stopped being angry.
