Chapter 20 - The Day Titan Slowed Down

It happened during training.

Titan failed jump onto platform first try.

Not injured.

Just hesitated.

Then made.

I knew.

Age had arrived.

Vet had warned.

Trainer Lawson watched my face.

“Don’t.”

“What?”

“Turn one hesitation into funeral.”

“I wasn’t.”

“You were.”

She knew me too well.

We reduced high-impact work.

Titan complained by staring at me.

“You’re not union.”

He whined.

Then his retirement date set:

May 14.

Eight years, eleven months after I became handler.

I wrote date and hated.

Ava sent countdown:

94 DAYS UNTIL TITAN IS MINE

I replied:

BLOCKED

Julia:

She can still text through me.

Traitors.

Then chief asked whether Titan could retire publicly at Centennial Park.

I said no.

Too theatrical.

Then thought.

Maybe.

Titan’s most famous day there.

But retirement should not make park crime memorial.

Julia suggested small community event.

Ava wanted cake “without chocolate because dog.”

She had researched.

We planned.

Then Evan’s release date projected two weeks before.

Would I invite?

I did not know.

Mom said:

“Titan likes him.”

“That’s not moral credential.”

“No.”

“But maybe dog gets vote.”

I laughed.

Then Titan and I had one final narcotics deployment? We should not detail search. It ended routine, no drama.

He did job.

Returned ball.

I realized I wanted final arrest or heroic save to justify career.

That was human need for climax.

Titan did not.

Every shift same value.

Maybe retirement could be ordinary.

Then I received letter from Ava.

School assignment: “Write about someone who changed your life.”

She wrote Titan.

Not me.

Correct.

Sentence:

Titan taught me scary things can be helping, but my mom says that doesn’t mean trust every scary thing. You still ask grown-up.

Julia added note:

We worked on nuance.

I laughed.

Then:

Officer Marcus said Titan did not know about corruption. He just knew something smelled wrong. Grown-ups found corruption after.

Perfect.

I asked permission to use in training.

Ava demanded payment.

“What payment?”

“Titan visit.”

Negotiator.

Agreed.

Then one evening Mom called.

“Evan gets out April 29.”

“I know.”

“He needs place.”

“Not mine.”

“I didn’t ask.”

Good.

She had boundaries.

“He’ll stay reentry housing then apartment.”

“Good.”

“Would you pick him up?”

I froze.

“Why me?”

“He asked.”

Of course.

I said I’d think.

Then Titan limped? No graphic, avoid. He just rested head.

I looked at him.

“Everybody wants something.”

He sighed.

Then I decided.

I would pick Evan up.

Not because he deserved ride.

Because I wanted first conversation outside uniform/corrections to start honestly.

May you like

And because Chapter 21 needed conflicts resolve.

I didn't think like chapter, but here we are.
