Chapter 15 - The Boardroom BetrayalOleso Meridian's headquarters occupied eleven floors of a glass tower in downtown Atlanta.

Daniel had founded the company in a rented office with two employees.

Twenty years later, it operated across sixteen states.

He had survived recessions, lawsuits, and contracts that nearly destroyed the business.

But he had never expected his marriage to threaten its leadership.

The emergency board meeting began at nine o'clock.

Six directors sat around the conference table.

Vanessa was not a board member.

She had no authority to remove Daniel.

But two directors had received a detailed complaint from Julian Vale, claiming Daniel's personal instability had compromised his judgment.

Monica sat beside Daniel.

Patrice joined them with a binder of financial records.

Board chair Leonard Brooks opened the meeting.

"Daniel, we've received allegations that require a response."

Daniel nodded.

"I understand."

Leonard continued.

"Specifically, questions about unauthorized charitable expenditures and your involvement in them."

Daniel looked around the room.

"Those transactions are already under independent review."

Director Harold Pierce leaned forward.

"Why weren't we informed sooner?"

"Because we only recently identified them. Counsel is determining the scope and appropriate reporting."

Harold exchanged a glance with another director.

Daniel noticed.

Rebecca had warned him that Vanessa might have allies inside the company.

Patrice distributed a chronology.

"Here are the relevant payments," she explained. "They were submitted under the family outreach program."

Harold interrupted.

"Vanessa chaired that committee with Daniel's knowledge."

"Correct," Patrice said. "But committee leadership did not authorize her to misrepresent services or bypass payment controls."

"Are you saying she committed fraud?"

"I'm saying there are unresolved discrepancies requiring investigation."

Daniel watched Harold's expression.

The director seemed unusually interested in protecting Vanessa.

"Harold," Daniel said, "did Julian contact you personally?"

Harold stiffened.

"That's irrelevant."

"It's relevant to understanding the complaint."

Leonard intervened.

"Answer the question."

Harold looked away.

"Yes."

"When?"

"Last week."

"Did he ask for anything?"

"He suggested the company needed stable leadership."

Daniel leaned forward.

"Did he suggest you become interim CEO?"

Silence.

Harold's jaw tightened.

"That conversation was hypothetical."

Patrice turned another page.

"There's an additional matter."

She displayed a transfer record.

A consulting payment of seventy-two thousand dollars had gone to a separate business called HPL Advisory.

Harold's initials appeared in the company's registration records.

He stared at the screen.

"That was legitimate strategic consulting."

Patrice remained calm.

"We're reviewing the services and any required conflict-of-interest disclosures."

Leonard turned toward Harold.

"Did you disclose this relationship?"

Harold didn't answer.

Daniel felt a cold realization.

Vanessa's plan might not have depended solely on gaining access to Naomi's trust.

Weakening Daniel's position could create opportunities inside the company itself.

"Let's be precise," Daniel said. "Nobody is being convicted in this room. But every relevant transaction will be independently examined."

Leonard nodded.

The board voted to establish a special committee of disinterested directors and outside advisers.

Harold abstained after his possible conflict was raised.

Daniel remained CEO, subject to the investigation and normal board oversight.

When the meeting ended, Harold approached him.

"You've made this personal."

Daniel looked directly at him.

"You became personally involved when you accepted money from people trying to undermine my company."

Harold's face reddened.

"You don't know the whole story."

"Then tell the investigators."

Daniel left.

In the elevator, Monica finally spoke.

"There's something you should see."

She showed him a message sent from an unfamiliar number.

It contained a photograph of Vanessa and Harold dining together.

The timestamp showed they had met the evening before Grace made her phone call.

Beneath the photograph was a sentence.

They were planning this before your daughter ever touched that bowl.
