Chapter 13 - Naomi's Empty BedroomVanessa left the mansion the following morning.

Daniel's attorney had arranged a written temporary separation agreement addressing her departure, access to personal belongings, and communication pending further legal proceedings.
Vanessa refused to sign any admission of wrongdoing.
Daniel didn't ask her to.
The agreement was not a substitute for accountability.
When Vanessa's car finally disappeared beyond the gates, Naomi watched from an upstairs window.
"Is she coming back?" she asked.
"She won't be living here while we sort things out," Daniel replied.
Naomi held her rabbit tighter.
"Did I make her go?"
"No."
"Because I told Grace?"
Daniel crouched beside her.
"Baby, adults are responsible for their own decisions. You are not responsible for Vanessa's."
Naomi looked unconvinced.
After lunch, Grace helped her clean the bedroom.
The room seemed beautiful at first glance.
Pink curtains. Expensive furniture. A custom-built bookshelf.
But when Grace opened the closet, she found that most of Naomi's favorite clothes had disappeared.
The bright sweaters Amara had bought.
The little red shoes Naomi had worn to kindergarten.
The floral blanket with embroidered butterflies.
Only carefully selected outfits remained.
"Where are your things?" Grace asked.
Naomi shrugged.
"Vanessa said they were baby clothes."
Grace examined the empty shelves.
"Where's your picture box?"
Naomi looked up.
"The one with Mommy?"
"Yes."
"She took it."
"When?"
"A long time ago."
Daniel entered as Grace was searching a drawer.
"What happened?"
Grace explained.
Daniel's expression darkened.
He remembered Amara keeping a shoebox filled with Naomi's first drawings, birthday cards, photographs, and tiny hospital bracelets.
"Did Vanessa say where she put it?" he asked.
Naomi nodded.
"In the room where I'm not allowed."
"What room?"
"The storage room behind the laundry."
Daniel followed Grace downstairs.
The room was locked.
A housekeeper's master key opened it.
Inside stood several plastic storage bins labeled DONATION, OLD CHILD ITEMS, and ESTATE ARCHIVE.
Grace opened the first.
Naomi's red shoes lay on top.
Underneath were photographs, ribbons, and birthday cards.
The second bin contained Amara's clothing.
The third held household files.
Daniel found the picture box at the bottom of a carton, wrapped in a black trash bag.
For several seconds, he could only stare.
Vanessa had removed more than possessions.
She had taken away the reminders that Naomi belonged to a family before Vanessa arrived.
Grace touched his shoulder.
"Sir, look at this."
Behind the cartons sat a portable document scanner.
Next to it were photocopies of several trust-related letters and an old estate inventory.
Daniel recognized the inventory from Amara's files.
Someone had been using this room as an informal document office.
He photographed the scene before touching anything else and called Rebecca.
Then he carried Naomi's picture box upstairs.
When he placed it on her bed, she opened it with shaking hands.
There was a photograph of Amara holding her as a newborn.
Naomi pressed it to her chest.
"She didn't throw it away?"
"No, baby."
Naomi began crying.
Daniel sat beside her.
"I'm going to help you keep everything that belongs to you."
She looked up.
"Even my memories?"
He put an arm around her.
"Especially those."
Later, while Grace returned the clothes to the closet, she found a tiny notebook hidden inside one of Naomi's old shoes.
Its cover was pink.
