Chapter 11 - The Brother Who Knew HerMarcus Vale arrived in Atlanta two days later.

He was thirty-five, broad-shouldered, and dressed in an ordinary navy jacket that made him look more like a high school teacher than a man connected to Vanessa's elaborate financial history.

He agreed to meet Daniel and Rebecca in a hotel conference room.

"I haven't spoken to my sister in four years," he began.

"Why?" Daniel asked.

Marcus gave a humorless smile.

"Because I stopped being useful."

Rebecca placed the old lawsuit papers on the table.

"Can you explain the dispute?"

Marcus glanced at them.

"Our mother owned a small printing business. When she became ill, Vanessa began handling her finances."

"What happened?"

"Mom trusted her. Vanessa paid bills, handled the bank accounts, spoke to doctors, everything."

His expression darkened.

"After a while, Mom started believing she couldn't make decisions without Vanessa's permission."

Daniel remembered Naomi's statement.

I have behavioral problems and sometimes say things that are not true.

Marcus continued.

"Vanessa told relatives Mom was confused. She isolated her from people who disagreed."

"Was your mother medically impaired?" Rebecca asked.

"She had health problems. But Vanessa exaggerated them."

"What happened to the money?"

"Some was spent properly. Some wasn't accounted for. We settled because Mom didn't want a public trial."

Daniel leaned forward.

"Did Julian Vale work with Vanessa then?"

Marcus nodded.

"He drafted documents. I don't know everything he did."

Rebecca made a note.

Marcus looked at Daniel.

"What's happening now?"

Daniel hesitated.

Then he told him about Naomi.

Marcus's expression changed.

He sat very still while Daniel described the dog bowl.

When Daniel finished, Marcus looked down at his hands.

"She used to do that to me."

Daniel's breath caught.

"Make you eat from a dog bowl?"

"No."

Marcus shook his head.

"Make humiliation look like discipline."

He described being thirteen and forced to stand in front of visiting relatives while Vanessa announced every mistake he had made.

She had been seventeen then.

Their mother had called it teasing.

Marcus had called it something else.

"She likes watching people ask for things she controls," he said.

Daniel thought of Naomi begging for dinner.

"Why?"

Marcus looked toward the window.

"Because if she controls what you need, she controls how you behave."

Rebecca waited before speaking.

"Mr. Vale, do you have documents showing what happened with your mother's accounts?"

"I kept everything from the lawsuit."

"Would you share them?"

"With my attorney's approval, yes."

Before leaving, Marcus took out his phone.

"There's one more thing."

He showed Daniel a photograph from a charity gala held five years earlier.

Vanessa stood beside Julian, smiling.

Between them was a woman Daniel recognized.

Evelyn Price.

Daniel frowned.

"Evelyn?"

Marcus nodded.

"She attended a meeting with them about a potential investment. Nothing came of it."

Daniel looked closer.

The photograph was dated before his marriage to Vanessa.

Before Amara's death.

Before Vanessa had supposedly met Evelyn through Naomi's trust.

Daniel felt the first cold certainty that the situation was larger than cruelty inside his house.

Vanessa's interest in his family might have begun long before he ever noticed her.
