Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Proof

I stepped directly in front of the kitchen island, shielding Sophie and Maya with my body, pointing my gun straight at Sterling's chest.

"Drop the weapon, Sterling!" I roared. "The police are two minutes away! Your company is gone! It's over!"

"It's not over until I get that drive!" Sterling shrieked, taking a erratic, heavy step forward. "That algorithm is worth four billion dollars! It was supposed to be my legacy! Arthur was a weak, pathetic fool who didn't know what he had, and his daughter ruined everything!"

"My father was ten times the man you will ever be!" Maya's voice echoed out from behind the marble counter.

She stepped out from behind me, her posture straight, her chin held high, holding her father's gold flash drive between her fingers.

"Maya, get back!" I hissed under my breath.

"No, Daniel," Maya said calmly. "He wants the key? Let him see it."

She looked Sterling dead in the eye—the man who had ordered the fire that killed her father, the man who had forced her to sleep on freezing concrete for four months.

"You think you can use my father's algorithm, Sterling?" Maya said, her voice filled with cold, absolute authority. "You don't even understand what it is. My father didn't build a financial tool for greedy monsters like you. He built an encrypted self-executing virus."

Sterling froze, his gun hand wavering slightly. "What are you talking about?"

"The moment I uploaded the master key to the federal court server at the Drake Hotel," Maya explained, a triumphant, brilliant smile breaking across her face, "the algorithm activated. It didn't just expose your fraud—it wiped every single server inside Vanguard’s network. Every stolen file, every secret account, every illegal transaction you ever made in off-shore accounts has been broadcast directly to the Department of Justice."

"You... you destroyed it?" Sterling gasped, his face turning ghostly pale. "You destroyed the most valuable code in human history?!"

"No," Maya said softly, touching her chest. "The code lives right here. In my head. Where you can never touch it."

SIRENS WAILING!

Red and blue lights suddenly flashed through the front windows of the estate. High-powered security floodlights illuminated the terrace as Vance’s armored vehicles pulled onto the lawn, accompanied by six Chicago police cruisers.

"Drop the weapon! Hands in the air!" heavy voices shouted over loudspeakers outside.

Sterling looked at the flashing lights, then at Maya, and finally at the barrel of my gun pointed dead at his forehead.

The heavy revolver slipped from his numb fingers, clattering onto the hardwood floor.

He sank to his knees in the shattered glass, burying his face in his hands, weeping pathetically as federal agents and my security team burst through the doors and forced him to the ground.

I lowered my weapon, letting out a long, ragged breath, and turned to look at Maya.

She stood surrounded by the red and blue flashing lights, a young woman who had walked through hell, fought a corporate leviathan, and emerged completely victorious.

Sophie ran out from behind the counter, throwing her arms around Maya's waist, hugging her as hard as her little arms could manage.

Maya wrapped her arms around my daughter, looking up at me through tears of joy, her laugh ringing out clear, beautiful, and completely unbroken.
