Chapter 8 - The Drake Hotel Showdown

The Grand Ballroom of the Drake Hotel in downtown Chicago was packed with three hundred corporate executives, financial journalists, and major Wall Street investors.

Camera flashes bounced off the massive crystal chandeliers overhead. At the front of the room, on an elevated stage, stood Vance Sterling—a tall, silver-haired man in a bespoke navy suit, standing behind a wooden podium displaying the blue logo of Vanguard Quantum Labs.

"Our third-quarter projections indicate an unprecedented forty percent increase in algorithmic efficiency," Sterling announced into the microphone, his voice dripping with smooth, practiced charm. "Thanks to the revolutionary foundations laid by our late, great Chief Scientist, Dr. Arthur Lin..."

At the back of the ballroom, the heavy oak doors were pushed open by two burly security officers in black suits.

I stepped through the entryway, wearing an immaculate black tuxedo. Clenched firmly in my arm was Maya Lin, looking striking, powerful, and utterly regal in her emerald jumpsuit.

Beside us walked three of Chicago's top corporate litigation attorneys and six heavily armed private security guards from Vance's team.

A whisper rippled through the back rows of the audience like a wildfire.

"Is that Daniel Harrison?" a journalist from Bloomberg muttered. "Who is that girl with him?"

Sterling paused mid-sentence on stage, his sharp eyes darting toward the back of the room. When his eyes landed on Maya, the color completely drained from his face. His hands gripped the edges of the podium so hard his knuckles turned white.

"Sterling!" I called out, my voice booming across the silent ballroom, cutting through the hum of the air conditioning. "You seem to be speaking about Dr. Arthur Lin's work. But I believe you forgot to invite his sole surviving heir and co-patent holder to this presentation!"

The ballroom erupted into instant, chaotic murmurs. Dozens of news cameras swung around, pointing their lenses directly at Maya and me.

"Security," Sterling hissed into the microphone, his polished composure shattering into visible rage. "Remove these intruders immediately. This is a private shareholder event!"

"I hold six percent of your voting stock, Vance!" I declared, taking five authoritative steps down the center aisle, with Maya walking proudly beside me. "And under Illinois corporate law, I have the right to introduce a motion to suspend this board meeting on grounds of active fraud!"

Maya stepped forward, taking the wireless microphone handed to her by my lead attorney.

She raised it to her lips, her voice ringing out crisp, clear, and unflinching across the vast room.

"My name is Maya Lin," she announced, her image appearing instantly on the four massive projection screens above the stage. "I am the daughter of Dr. Arthur Lin. Four months ago, Vanguard Quantum Labs claimed my father's quantitative algorithm was corporate property. They claimed he died in an accidental fire."

She pulled the gold flash drive from beneath her collar, holding it high in the air for every camera in the room to see.

"This is the master encryption key to my father's work," Maya declared. "It contains proof that Vanguard Quantum Labs stole his patent, forged his estate documents, and ordered an illegal surveillance campaign against me. And thirty minutes ago, my legal counsel filed a formal civil fraud suit and criminal conspiracy report with the United States District Court!"

The ballroom exploded into absolute, unbridled bedlam.

Reporters scrambled to their feet, shouting questions, while camera lights blinded the stage. Investors pulled out their phones in panic as Vanguard's stock price began to plummet live on terminal screens across the globe.

Sterling stood behind the podium, trembling with pure, unadulterated fury, staring down at the teenager he had hunted for four months—the girl who had just destroyed his corporate empire in ninety seconds flat.
