Chapter 5 - The Midnight Alarm

At 2:14 AM, the quiet dark of my bedroom was shattered by a low, rhythmic pulsing sound from my bedside tablet.

It wasn't the main house alarm. It was the motion-activation alert from the guest house perimeter.

I threw off my blanket, grabbed a heavy flashlight and the 9mm handgun I kept secured in my nightstand safe, and sprinted down the stairs in my socks.

"Thomas! Vance!" I called out into the dark hallway, unlatching the heavy oak back door.

The night air was freezing. Frost glinted on the lawn.

As I rounded the brick wall leading to the guest house, I saw a dark figure clad in black tactical gear crouched near the cottage’s side window. The figure was holding a handheld electronic device, attempting to bypass the deadbolt's digital key card sensor.

"Hey!" I roared, raising the flashlight and illuminating the intruder in a beam of harsh white light. "Get away from there!"

The figure snapped his head toward me. Through his dark tactical mask, I caught a glimpse of cold, professional eyes. Without a word, he pulled a suppressed pistol from his jacket holster.

Pfft! Pfft!

Two high-velocity rounds struck the brick wall three inches above my head, showering me with mortar dust.

I ducked behind a heavy stone planter, raising my gun and firing three quick shots into the dark. The gunfire echoed like thunder across the quiet Lincoln Park neighborhood.

Behind me, the floodlights along the main house roared to life, casting blinding light across the entire lawn. Sirens began to wail as my automated security system triggered.

The intruder cursed, abandoned the window, vaulted over the six-foot wooden garden gate, and sprinted toward the east perimeter wall.

A second later, the guest house front door flew open.

Maya stood in the doorway, wearing an oversized sweatshirt, her eyes wide with terror, holding a heavy iron fireplace poker in a defensive stance. Her backpack was slung tightly over her shoulder—she had slept with it on.

"Daniel!" she yelled, her voice trembling. "Did they fire shots?!"

"I'm fine!" I yelled, running up the cottage steps and pushing her back inside, slamming the heavy wooden door behind us and turning the deadbolt. "Are you hurt?!"

"No," Maya gasped, her chest heaving as she slumped against the counter. "They found me. I don't know how, but they found me."

"Who found you, Maya?" I asked, setting my gun on the table, my pulse racing. "Was it Vanguard Quantum?"

Maya looked up at me, absolute shock written across her features. "You... you know who Vanguard is?"

"I know your father was Dr. Arthur Lin," I said, looking her straight in the eye. "I know he died in an arson attack four months ago, and I know someone just tried to break into this cottage with military-grade tactical gear. It's time to tell me the truth, Maya. If I'm going to protect you and my daughter, I need to know what's in that bag."

Maya looked at her taped backpack. Slowly, with trembling hands, she unzipped the main compartment and pulled out a sleek, brushed-titanium external hard drive enclosed in a shock-proof bio-metric case.

"My father didn't just build a financial algorithm, Daniel," Maya whispered, tears glistening in her dark eyes. "He built a predictive behavioral framework. It can predict market crashes, corporate bankruptcies, and supply chain collapses six weeks before they happen."

She swallowed hard, looking at the glowing blue light on the drive.

"Vanguard didn't want to license it," she continued. "Their CEO, Vance Sterling, wanted to use it to manipulate global short-markets and crash entire national economies for profit. When my dad refused to give him the master key, Sterling had our house burned to the ground with my father inside."

"And you have the master key?" I asked softly.

May you like

Maya touched her collarbone, pulling out a thin silver chain hidden beneath her shirt. Hanging from it was a small, high-density flash drive encased in a custom gold housing.

"I am the only person alive who can unlock this drive," Maya said, her voice dropping into a fierce, dangerous register. "And Vance Sterling will burn down this entire city to get it from me."
