Chapter 12 - Vanessa Comes to the Hospital Archive

Months later, Vanessa requested meeting with Naomi.
Naomi hesitated.
Then agreed in attorney’s office.
Not hospital.
Vanessa arrived without entourage.
“I owe you apology.”
Naomi waited.
“I knew you were pregnant.”
“Yes.”
“I didn’t tell Ethan.”
“Yes.”
“I told myself it wasn’t my place.”
Naomi’s expression hardened.
“But you were marrying him.”
“Yes.”
Vanessa looked down.
“That made it my place.”
Good.
Then:
“I was afraid he would leave.”
“He did.”
“Yes.”
No cruelty.
Just fact.
Vanessa cried.
“I’m sorry.”
Naomi replied:
“Thank you.”
Then:
“I don’t need you to disappear so I can feel secure.”
Vanessa nodded.
That line likely hit.
Then Naomi asked:
“Did you love him?”
“Yes.”
“I believe you.”
Vanessa looked surprised.
Naomi continued:
“Love doesn’t make silence harmless.”
Exactly.
They did not become friends.
No need.
Then Vanessa gave Naomi one document.
Her father had retained.
A copy of Patricia’s original relocation plan.
It contained handwritten note from Richard:
If Naomi refuses, question paternity publicly.
Dated months before fake report.
So paternity smear was planned early.
Vanessa had never seen note until restructuring audit.
She turned over.
This strengthened case against Richard.
Then Naomi asked:
“Why give me instead of lawyers?”
Vanessa realized.
“Actually, you’re right.”
She handed to Naomi's attorney.
No direct drama.
Good.
Then she left.
Outside, Ethan happened to arrive for separate meeting.
They saw each other.
Awkward.
“Hi.”
“Hi.”
He asked:
“How are you?”
“Learning.”
He smiled faintly.
“Same.”
No romance.
Then Vanessa said:
“I won’t ask for forgiveness.”
“Good.”
She almost laughed.
Then:
“I hope Emma’s okay.”
“She is.”
Vanessa nodded.
Walked away.
Some endings are quiet.
Then Richard’s investigation concluded preliminary:
He knowingly used questionable lineage data to delay trust claims.
Corporate misstatements separate.
Charges? Could be civil and criminal referrals. Let's say prosecutors filed fraud-related charges later; keep legal.
Richard resigned permanently.
Grant company restructured under outside management.
Employees largely protected though some assets sold.
No fairytale.
Elise divorced? Could be personal, no need.
Vanessa built career outside father, maybe nonprofit? Better not virtue conversion. She joined independent real estate firm, disclosed conflicts.
Then Ethan had a question:
“Would I have married her if I knew?”
Naomi said:
“Stop asking.”
“Why?”
“You’ll never know.”
Counterfactual obsession.
He nodded.
Instead ask:
“What do I do now?”
May you like
Exactly.
