Chapter 11 - Patricia’s Second Chance

Patricia entered therapy voluntarily.

Not redemption performance.

She told Ethan only after months.

“I keep hearing Marcus.”

He looked.

“What did he say?”

“Stop deciding for me.”

Ethan remembered.

Marcus said that often.

Patricia cried.

“I thought if I prevented mistakes, my children would be safe.”

“And?”

“I prevented choices.”

There.

Then she asked to apologize to Naomi.

Naomi agreed only in neutral office with counselor.

Patricia said:

“I lied about Ethan.”

“I showed you documents meant to frighten you.”

“I used his signature without permission.”

“I blocked contact.”

“I treated your pregnancy as corporate problem.”

Naomi listened.

Then:

“I’m sorry.”

No justification.

Naomi replied:

“Thank you.”

No forgiveness statement.

Then:

“You don’t get to make decisions about Emma.”

“I understand.”

“Not through Ethan.”

“I understand.”

“Not gifts.”

“I understand.”

Good.

Then Patricia asked:

“Can I someday know her?”

Naomi looked at Ethan.

He did not answer for her.

Naomi:

“Maybe.”

That was enough.

Patricia cried.

Then Noah separately chose not to see Patricia yet.

Different.

She respected.

Growth measured in hearing no from one child while another maybe yes.

Then Ethan discovered Daniel Reeves had diverted Naomi's emails under Patricia's instruction.

He terminated? Daniel already resigned. Could he face action. Ethan interviewed.

Daniel apologized.

“Why?”

“Your mother controlled access.”

“That isn’t answer.”

“I wanted my job.”

There.

He was paid well.

Afraid.

He complied.

Ethan asked:

“Did you ever think baby deserved my knowledge?”

Daniel cried.

“Yes.”

“But I kept waiting.”

Same.

Ethan did not rehire.

But provided neutral reference for work unrelated to misconduct? Maybe not. He documented truth.

Daniel faced no criminal if not beyond. But accountability professional.

Then Ethan changed executive access system:

No family member can instruct assistant to block personal contact without Ethan authorization.

Sensitive messages logged.

No one gatekeeper.

A practical lesson.

Then Naomi said:

“You’re turning relationship into IT policy.”

He smiled.

“Occupational hazard.”

But systems matter.

Then Emma reached six weeks.

Ethan learned bottles.

Diapers.

Sleep deprivation.

No heroic father montage.

He made mistakes.

Naomi corrected.

He listened.

One night he said:

“I missed entire pregnancy.”

Naomi replied:

“You missed because people lied.”

Then:

“And because your life made it possible.”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

Important.

No empty absolution.

Then:

“I’m sorry.”

She accepted.

No romantic promise.

Then one morning Emma grabbed Ethan’s finger.

He sat frozen.

Naomi laughed:

“She does that to everybody.”

He smiled.

Good.

May you like

No destiny.
